The self confidence dance creates, the exercise and the art form far outshines the makeup for girls and boys who are serious about their art. Makeup does help with presentation when you are not close to the stage in the audience IMO.I am talk about the dance programs including ballet, jazz, modern where the girls wear what looks like a pound of makeup with provocative clothing.
Can't say I have ever seen a boy going into the community centre for one of these recitals. But it is possible I wouldn't even recognize such a boy as a dancer. And the boys?
And, really, it should be possible to teach dance without doing that. Because we can't discourage dance as an activity. It's actually good for exercise, balance, and so on. It would not take a huge effort to get rid of the sexualization.I am talk about the dance programs including ballet, jazz, modern where the girls wear what looks like a pound of makeup with provocative clothing.
No makeup is used during practices, which is usually weekly and to teach dance steps. Only for performances once a year for the younger ones in front of their relatives. I rather enjoy watching my granddaughter. And, really, it should be possible to teach dance without doing that. Because we can't discourage dance as an activity. That said, I also would not put all the blame on the dance programs. I am sure a lot of that is the influence of social media and music video, with the kids wanting to look like Beyonce or whomever is "hot".
I have heard similar arguments for team sports for children. Fitness, teamwork and so on.The self confidence dance creates, the exercise and the art form far outshines the makeup for girls and boys who are serious about their art. All the more reason it should be possible to rein it in and encourage fun costumes and makeup rather than sexualized ones. And maybe a lot do that and Jim is exaggerating the problem. I haven't been around a dance class in a long time.No makeup is used during practices, which is usually weekly and to teach dance steps. Which is another whole problem. Dance is another activity where competition has displaced play and exercise as the motivation.Fun costumes???
From what I can see attire for recitals and competitions is serious business.
