I once heard a woman use the phrase, "Well that's a sow in the gutter!"...meaning an inconvenient, unpleasant occurrence.
Of course, she was a farmer.

My mother used to say, "By the Holy gods of war, dont make me come up there!"
Could be something she made up, we just knew she was really mad.

I'm curious about an expression from across the pond that a few of you may have heard. "Blind me with science!"
Does that refer to something in particular?
It has a ring to it.

Never heard that one.

How's this for communication?

"Even having this extended dialogue rather than going standard has volunteer costs."

I took it to mean someone thought I was was wasting this person's time.

But what the heck is going standard?

Volunteer costs? Really??

Actually now that I have gone over the Conversation a few times, I think I understand what this person meant by "going standard".

It certainly wasn't clear to me as things unfolded.

Lol, in case anyone was wondering, that was "jaynewonders" stating "Even having this extended dialogue rather than going standard has volunteer costs."

"Going standard" - using a standard design, rather than designing a custom one. Another term that I use from my manufacturing days are "make to stock", "make to order" or "engineered" --- price is much higher if engineered". When you are purchasing clothes, you might consider "off the rack" versus "made to order" or "tailored".

"Volunteer costs" -- think that i first was introduced to them back in my church days with church school, when we had folks doing stuff that could easily be done in a different way. (Things like printing & stapling the annual report for example.) When our team looked at activities at a different non-profit, as part of volunteer management, we had to look at the time it took to do something, and was it the right thing for the organization to do, with limited volunteers available. Basically, whether you are paying someone or not, there is a cost to the volunteer, even if it is just their time and their inability to do something else.

Note: Volunteer costs doesn't imply that it is a waste. It means that it should be justified to say "hey, is this good usage of the resources at hand"

Haha, flashback to dance parties in the 80s?

It was one of my mom's sayings.

She also used to say that if the mountain won't come to Muhammad, then Muhammad has to go to the mountain.

Anyone else know this adage?
Yup. How about responding to a question about where you are going with "I'm going to see a man about a dog". Recently I said about a prominent male "He is all mouth and trousers".

I recall hearing, "I'm going to see a man about a horse" as a code phrase for "I'm going to visit the washroom."
