It's Canada Day weekend and what better time to celebrate the fine music that has come, and is still coming, from Canadian artists. I'll kick it off with an old classic.

I first heard Both Sides Now in Grade 5 or 6 when our school choir sang it during a concert we did at a nearby longterm care facility. It hit me right away, even at that age. A beautiful melody and powerful, poetic lyrics. Joni was still working in the music industry at that time and her songs came up on the radio fairly regularly so I didn't have to wait long to hear more. She remains a favorite among the great Canadian songwriters, right up there with Leonard Cohen in my books.

This performance of the song from 1969 came up on Youtube and inspired me to open up this thread. WIsh I could see the whole show, which is hosted by Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas and also has Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, & Mary as a guest.

 
Turn the clock ahead 50 years, and the latest hot singer-songwriter from the Great White North is Toronto's Shawn Mendes. He first hit Youtube as a teen indie singer in 2013 and has been a huge presence on the charts in recent years.

THANK YOU!!! I've already posted this song twice (the original video once and Buffy's live performance of it from the CBC Music festival the second time) in other threads so didn't feel right posting it again myself. It's one of my favorite songs of the past decade. How can you not love a song that brings together two of Canada's best indigenous musicians, both Polaris Prize winners?

And since we're talking about Buffy Sainte-Marie, here she is from Canada Day 2017 in Toronto with another great song:

One Canadian covers another. That's Avril Lavigne covering a Sarah McLachlan hit.

 
And Sarah herself with one of those songs that is probably going to withstand the test of time. It was the lead-off track from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, which ranks for me as her finest work.

 
It seems like just yesterday that Carly Rae Jepsen was hitting it big with "Call Me Maybe". It has been six years since that song. She has put out three more albums, appeared in a Broadway musical (Cinderella), and racked up a raft of awards in that time. And her new hit "Too Much" is burning up the charts.

 
CBC has been posting videos from the Canada Day show on Parliament Hill today. This one went to the top of my list. Strumbellas are one of the best recent Canadian bands and this is the song that pretty much made their name. I fell in love with it from the first time I heard it.

 
Hip-hop maestro K'naan and singer-songwriter Coeur de Pirate. Not sure which one wrote this, but I like it.
