Musk has had his Neuralink brain implant approved by the FDA and now the first patient has received one. Seems he has his hands on a lot of everything lately.
How does everyone feel about this?
Is he spreading himself too thin lately or involved in too much IYO?
Is it ethical?

Non confidence or no conscience about what he could win with this if trumped instead of folding ... winning is said to be everything and well ... losing is nothing to them and thus it goes unsaid!

"Nothing to lose?" A hollow 'd eck? May resemble an "O" ... thus anos ... rich in there with Daevas ... an old word relating to pan Theos ... flat our Ayer?

When going on it gets sophisticated as the love affair between Cupid and Psyche ... despised by Mort! So immortalized in myth! Rare grasp ...

Nope nope nope - it’s horrific. Especially because he made it, I can’t trust it’s on any good trajectory. He’s using disabled people as a pretext, an excuse. He wants power and control.

See quote #2
I hear you, but another thing that worries me is his involvement all over the place without proper safeguards put in place.
He's making cars, he's putting over 300 satellites up ( starlink), now neuralink without being closely monitored....what do we know about who this first patient is and who's watching?Does being a billionaire buy you less scrutiny?

To be clear, he is not the only one working on this and others are actually ahead of him. This is only getting attention because it is him. Personally, I suspect Musk has a day of reckoning coming. Not specifically over this, but his whole approach to business. The only question is whether it will be regulators, competitors, or shareholders who come after him first. There's already grumbling on the Tesla front and he lost a court case challenging his compensation package there.

I realize there are other pioneers in the field, but Musks experiments with animals have not all been successful ( monkey implants) and 1500 animals have died or suffered greatly. Neuralink was only started in 2016...and now 2023 he's experimenting with human brains and the public does not know who this first human is, what the person needs this invasive surgery for and the expected outcome. Do we even know if it's only his company overseeing this procedure? Would anyone know if it goes drastically wrong?
Are there independent overseers to scrutinize this?
It seems we were filled in more about the patient and his procedure and why, with the first mechanical heart transplant years ago.

His trials have to be published and submitted to the FDA if he wants approval so there is scrutiny. This is a medical device. He even needed their approval to go to this step (which is mentioned in the article). And they can shut him down if there is a problem, though I know he will grumble loudly on X if that happens.

As for why we know so little about the patient, when that first mechanical heart transplant happened, I think there was less focus on privacy. To put out detailed information on the patient, they need the patient's consent. Even in the publication of the results, the patient will be assigned a number or something, though there will be details of their condition and outcome. So I would argue that's feature, not a bug.

True, but will we know if he dies from this procedure...or will he just move on to the next one like his animal experiments?
Also, just wondering, if our " thinking" can be transferred to a computer, how do we stop our brains from being used as a marketable area or influenced from hackers, or control....may be a silly question....but....

We will know if he dies because the FDA will likely put a hold on the trials until they know why. But if he survives and life goes on, then we won't hear much until the results are published.

I think his newest "project" would be better served if he found a volunteer that didn't want to remain anonymous.

Why? Most clinical trials involved dozens or hundreds of people and we only see the aggregate data at the end.

I suppose because this is somewhat controversial with many unanswered questions that will create conspiracy theories that will affect the publics perceptions....including mine.

And the FDA isn't perfect...they have approved many things that have been found harmful and recalled. And people with their own money also seem to have more influence on others without money.

I haven't been following any of this. What does the implant DO? Is it like the implant to control the tremors of Parkinson's? Or prevent epileptic seizures?

From what I understand it is an implanted disc at the base of the brain with wires that extend into different areas of the brain, depending what you are treating eg. Speech, memory, paralysis, strokes, plus more applications which may hopefully reverse conditions or aid in improving conditions .The apparatus in the brain is all connected to a computer.
I wish I could post a link that would describe it better that I can.
In Elon Musks case, we are not sure who or why this chosen human needs it or what he is being treated for.
I don't doubt this is needed research but to me it should be more open with the general public. It could become life changing for many many people.

I know … the universe, humanity, and the infrastructure of the planet - are like a personal playground to him. It’s obscene.

Global capitalism shields him from scrutiny. He’s established everywhere so he’s accountable to no-one.
