Threads about the United Church of Canada

In a couple of weeks we will mark the 100th anniversary of the inaugural service of the United Church of Canada.

AS I prepare for worship this week I am pondering:
What do we remember and celebrate?
What do we remember and repent of?
What do we remember and lament?
What do we really not want to remember?

OR also:
What have we learned about ourselves, the world, and how we are called to be the church?
Where have we missed the boat altogether?
Where and how have we made a difference in Canadian society? (living in the dream of being the 'church with the soul of a nation')
How have we changed over the years? Positively and/or negatively?

Family Cluster was enjoyable enough, as was the yearly Candlelight Service. Choir was fun. My family always sat in the front seat at worship services. There was a lot of bad theology floating around, but also some good. I got to preach my first sermons. Over the years the United Church has become more and more liberal, less and less biblical

Are you telling us that there is bad theology in with the rest? How would we separate them without diving power and then if all was peaceful and calm ... solemnity would erupt like Samuel ... when Eli called! That which lies there as shadowy needs investigation. Mortal Gods will deny questions ... they are embarrassing ... thus the gas in essence ... mire wisps ... in the bottom eh? Like Shenandoah ... a very long story ...

Does pain alert one to things that should be noted? Thus that kind of pathology ... what kind of person and nature does it take to visit the nigh furies ... keep it to a low roar folks ... although the rants can be complicated if not complexity personified ... autonomously even ... ready for the Pickens ... if well thought through ... you can bet id'll be ignored because of the great crowd that rather will than know beta ... Willy's? Can cause shivers and Chivas ... be the death of Mae ... then June ... letterman? They dance too ... it is profound ... that's intelligence ... under the horizon of those up there because of the Pede. Prin. I'm pediments ...

100 Years ... some say a century ... and much of that in solitude if you respect the point of Longevous ...

Hued go that distance? Lord open deh eart land ... where stuff crossed (t'd) de ear ... to where? Its deep ... it is where we are displaced, dissociated because to reason unknown ... determined will ... and then the roadrunner, a sort of railbird that may torment vipers ... and these do go down rabbit holes ...

Behind ever reality is a myth the other side of currency ... one absolute the other abstract and incomplete! It is how it incarnates ... I know I experienced autonomy as being shut out ... no open sole there ... mistaken powers?

@GordW

firsts are great :3

Enjoy celebrating/bearing witness and hopefully.you can find some fellows to groove with at your special.time :3

Firsts ... question is absolute or abstract as the thing hanging in the tree Ab Salaam ... peace in the shadows ... a kind of veil ... thus we dip into the unseen!

When right into it is is distracting ... so back off and look it over from there ... separation is said to ease something or other ... the alternate?

Who initiated the tale ... are they aping us?

My family was around for a good chunk of that history. Grandad (paternal) was born into a Welsh Methodist family pre-union and then was ordained in the then-fairly new UCCan where he served in various ministries for over 60 years. Even after retirement, he kept being involved with the church in various volunteer capacities right up to his death at 81.

Then my parents were both active members of a United Church so my brothers and I were all raised in that world. Sunday School, Youth Group, and such. I was the youth member of a Pastoral Relations Committee who found the minister who later married me and my middle brother to our respective spouses. I fell out a bit around that time, too, since this minister and the leadership of the congregation opposed gay ordination in 1988, which I supported. That's probably where my drift away started.

At present, me and youngest brother are unchurched and middle brother is Missionary Alliance (he swung more conservative) so there is no family presence in the church, though I would consider returning. Dad ended up Evangelical Lutheran but that's a result of marrying a Lutheran after Mom died.

What do I think is great about the UCCan, besides it's role in my spiritual formation?

Big tent. I've known UCCan members who were quite conservative, quite progressive (though not Vosper-level), and everywhere in between. It's great for spiritual formation that way since it both presents a range of influences and offers challenges.

It mostly values educated, thoughtful leadership. Lots of ministers with doctorates, sermons that challenge and present ideas, room for questioning and discussion. Many are more comfortable with there being no one, right answer than you'd find in some churches.

Sure, it's not as broad as UU'ism given the focus on Jesus and the New Testament narrative, but moreso than you'd get in some other Christian denominations and branches.

To be honest, I think that would surprise the church's founders. The original Basis of Faith is actually pretty conservative when you think about it. However, there has been a remarkable degree of evolution, as evidenced by the addition of other statements of faith, up to and including the Song of Faith.

Happy centenary, UCCan! Whatever the future holds, you've had an interesting ride so far.

Over the years the United Church has become more and more liberal, less and less biblical
Which is a feature, not a bug, for some else it would not have happened. And not everyone defines "Biblical" the way you do. Something that unsafe needs to learn as well.

Imagine the Nature of that Bug ... and then there are those that avoid any questions and thus learn nothing ... perhaps a point to achieve for those that wish not to collect such thoughts ... in thermodynamics a steady state nature is hard to maintain when everything is out and going about ...

There are 3 laws ... the 3rd is the one that is most indecisive and thus baffles those stuck somewhere in the medium! The Bishop of Myra spoke of this condition ... and the Romans countered it! In the end one questions... "what's the point"? There is was, already past ... gobshite that was mostly unseen?

Amen

Plus, beliefs have us :3

(thus why methinks the purpose of the Judaic way of doing things, to reinforce the already existing fundamental beliefs and avoid nihilistic belief drift...or Churchs/Sangha, a special place seperate from the world -- other influences -- where one can recharge back to the fundamental beliefs...)

Like.over time I have become.more Centrist (ack 2d scale I can't leave you :ROFLMAO:) with no choosing on my part

Which reminds me of a very fun Greg Egan story Unstable Orbits in the Space of Lies. Earth becomes a place where beliefs literally become external.and exert their own "gravity" where everyone on Earth comes to.believe only that which belief basin they live in. And the narrator has figured oot how to exist at the fringes where the belief gravity is the least...

Thanks @GordW for sharing your thoughts. I think you have done a great job summarizing both the history and the character of the church. I feel comfortable, inspired and challenged in this church of ours. I also think we have much to say and offer… I’m just concerned that there’s an echo of sorts…emptiness where there should be those listening and doing. Because I value the gift and privilege of faith, I really want to share it. But people with no experience of church seem to expect perfection and we don’t offer anything as static as that!

To support the challenge of divining right from wrong and knowing the difference ...

It was stated by an ancient Seer ... sometimes known as a mystic that sees non items ... thoughts are like that as they drift on Ayre ... the stone clad hate eM as they sit there; turtled light to the bottom ... integral reciprocation? The whole thing is converted to the opposed vector ... occurs in waves ... thus we surf trying to catch up ... can you stand the Planck 'd? Thus they raft off into alien zones ... Zoans? In some traditions that's Joan's Boies ... scattered letterman ...

Com pose ... and there it was naked virtue ... the global lie wouldn't accept it ... thus the mistruth drifts ... more floating crap ... because why?

We didn't wish to know! Then the X Ception ... there ide was gone ... really quite paranormal ... beside himself! Ab doula ... in some traditional tongues it indicates someone that serves the entire integral traveller ... a bote load of fools? It came into de Light as ל a snaky strike ... sea snake ... a different fish?

Isn't there something called a Hagfish posing as Haggai ... pull this on? Covered eh ...
