Here are the details on the Ontario stay-at-home order. It's much tighter than before, with most retail outside of grocery and pharmacy going curbside (which deals with the microwaves and such per @ChemGal),

They are also upping their game on vaccinations by bumping up essential workers in high risk areas.

However, the article also points out some worrisome statistics showing class division in vaccination, with Toronto's upscale areas having higher vaccination rates even though illness and death from COVID is higher in poor and working class areas (the article specifically talks about the example of Rosedale vs. Jane/Finch).

Based on anticipated supply, Ford says they hope to get the vaccination rate up to 40% in the coming four weeks during the lockdown.

The other unanticipated effect of these lockdowns is "minimum orders" for pick up.

Back in January, I needed Ice-melt stuff. Can't use salt or salt & sand because of wood decks, flower gardens all around. Must use that eco-safe "volcanic ash" or whatever they're flogging that doesn't hurt the gardens or the decks. Little goes a long way. Jug costs $17.99, usually does at least a winter and a half, maybe two. So, local home hardware. Try to order a jug of this. Minimum order pre-tax is $20. Try to think what else I need (should have gone for furnace filters, but I had a 6 pack at the time), end up desperately ordering two jugs. I am de-iced from now to forever.

So this is odd from CBC. Provinces report Covid numbers differently. Of course. Why would we ever do it the same!

but some provinces don’t count Covid patients who no longer test positive but remain in hospital

odd

Yes, not counting them makes things look better. Never mind that these people are still taking up beds and therefore reducing overall capacity.
It’s been clear for a long time, that the average time in ICU is significant higher for Covid patients than for others, which is the whole argument for trying to prevent hospitalizations. ( besides the poor outcome of ventilated patients). Politics.

I think that gets silly as it's hard to determine what is essential at times, different products different usages, essential businesses etc.
Gov of Ontario determined that groceries, household cleaning supplies, pharmacy items, pet care are essential. Some retail stores are allowed to remain open, by appointments only (safety supply, optical, car services) Everything else can still be purchased either online or by phone.

The tide has certainly turned from one year ago. The American Centre for Disease Control has issued a bulletin to U.S. citizens to avoid all travel to Canada.

Dear old Randall continues to find humour in the pandemic. Quite like Friday's xkcd.

I can't remember where I mispoke.

I had shared that I knew someone who is a denier. Works in health care. Refuses to wear a mask but DOES wear a mask in hospital and previously at LTC.

She refuses to be vaccinated, but also refuses to have a nose swab.

She can refuse in the hospital. She couldn't at the LTC

Also their child is terrified of people wearing masks, and does not wear mask at school

While am no longer a member of the UU fellowship, I do still read the newsletter and upcoming services. Might rejoin once the pandemic is under control.

Read the April issue today and found out that a respected elder of that church, a 91 year-old retired astronomy prof from Western, passed way from complications of COVID. We had some great discussions during my time there because she really appreciated my love for science, especially her own field, and how I worked it into my sermons. I did a whole service on spirituality and space exploration and she loved it. We also had a connection through the father of one of Little M's grade school friends, who was chair of physics & astronomy when our kids were hanging out together. She had helped recruit him for the university. I haven't seen her in a few years but will miss her greatly.

Brings home again that this bug is real and dangerous and having a real impact on lives.

My guess is - some minor bureaucrat had them dumped in a warehouse and now no one knows where they are. I have almost NO confidence that government knows what it is doing - now or previously.

I hear ya, but someone needs to get on this and find out if they even exist before they reach the stage of denying ventilators to anyone.

They did buy ventilators and it was a bit of a scandal. They bought from a company owned by a friend of trudeaus and apparently paid more than the going rate

i expect the issue on the ground is space and staffing as much as ventilators. Caring for an intubated patient is a skill set that only OR, ICU, CCU, NICU nurses likely have. And an ill patient in ICU generally has his own nurse. Ten ventilators need ten nurses

Yes, and Covid patients need to be turned onto their stomach regularly, requiring four or more people to do that.

Numbers from Europe showed that in the first wave 50% of the Covid patients on ventilators died, but they also were mostly the elderly. Now it’s the younger ones and their ration is more like one in three, but they stay longer in ICU.

Ive worked with ventilators in St. Joes in complex care and never needed 4 people, 2 is required...in a pinch turned them myself
The thing is if they start getting overcrowded these ventilators need to be sent to other hospitals where the covid cases arent too high
.....theyre already saying they may have to farm people out to other hospitals or in tents.
