Women's World Cup 2019 - Where's the coverage?

With all the excitement (justifiable to be sure) over the Raptors, another big sports story is getting overlooked. And, sadly, it's the Women's World Cup in soccer. Unlike in men's footie, we are actually a contender in women's (ranked fifth in this tournament) and our captain, Christine Sinclair, is a legend in the sport.

Anyhow, today we beat New Zealand 2-0, with London native Jessie Fleming scoring her first tournament goal on an assist from Nicole Prince, who then scored the second goal. That gives us a 10 game unbeaten streak so far in 2019 (7-0-3), and takes us to the round of 16 in this tournament where, alas, we meet the European champions The Netherlands.

So, let's take a break from celebrating the Raptors who are, after all, a bunch of Americans working in Canada (there's only one Canadian on the team at present) and celebrate a team that's truly 100% Canadian.

The women are doing well - as usual. Some stellar athletes!

And the folks to the South advance as well. Each still has a game left in the group stage (we play the Dutch, US plays Sweden) but have sewn up their spots in the next round. Matchups for that round haven't been posted yet.

My oops. We aren't playing the Dutch in the round of 16, rather they are our last game in the group stage. In fact, both countries have already locked up berths in the next round and are playing for position. Cameroon and New Zealand, the other two in our group, are finished though they still have a game in hand against each other.

Similarly, in Group F, the US and Swedes have it sewn up and their game on Thurs. is to determine position as well.

Had a hellish week at work and completely forgot about our final group stage game last Thursday until this morning.

We lost 2-1 to the Dutch but, as I said, we were already on to the Round of 16 and the game was more about who we played in that round. This afternoon, we play Sweden in the Round of 16.

Lots of familiar faces now that we're into the playoff rounds. Germany, England, France, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands. Pretty much the same bunch you'd see in a men's tournament. Even Cameroon (who lost to the Germans yesterday) fits that bill as pretty much the best soccer country in Africa. We and the US are kind of the outliers, both much more successful in women's than men's.

So, I'll try to find someone who's live tweeting this afternoon's game and we'll see what happens.

Oh, and if you happen to have TSN and a few hours to kill this afternoon, I think it starts at 3pm Eastern. Apparently, TSN has an all-female crew covering the event, or so I saw somewhere (a tweet maybe).

USA- Spain is under way. 1-1 early in the first half. First time an opponent has scored on the Americans in this tournament. They had some easy wins in the group stage but I suspect Spain will make them work for this one.

@Planet Futbol, the soccer arm of Sport Illustrated on Twitter, is live tweeting the US-Spain game. Hopefully they'll cover Canada-Sweden, too.

2-1 USA, both of their goals on penalty kicks. An hour to go until Canada plays Sweden. I've added Fox Soccer to my follows. They seem to be tweeting more regularly than Planet Futbol.

0-0 at the half in Canada-Sweden. IOW, business as usual in the soccer world.:D

Canada Soccer is live tweeting this one which is fortunate because the two US feeds lost interest after the US game ended. Fox Sports has tweeted once, Planet Futbol, in spite of its seemingly international name, has gone dark.

Sadly. Waiting now to see the final brackets for the QF before I commit to another team. In the past, I've gone with the Dutch (we have Dutch friends) but China did make the round of 16 and their match against Italy just started. If I can't cheer for my own country going forward, there's always my wife's. :D I'm not expecting much. Italy vs. China seems like a wash but you never know.

Still 1-0 at the half. China's trying but not connecting.

I'm not one to watch soccer, but the last few days noticed lots of coverage of it.
I often watch CTV news, that wasn't on at noon yesterday for the games.

Sigh, now I can't cheer for my wife's country, either. 2-0 Italy. Time to look at the bracket and see who appeals.
