Just calling attention to this article from IT World. Avast has actually had a decent reputation among free anti-virus programs but this definitely tarnishes that reputation. It is a "you get what you pay for" situation. And, yes, I have used it though I think I've removed it from most devices now. Windows Defender, which is included with your Windows license, is decent. Beyond that, you may be safest to pay for something like Norton, though I loath it for being a serious resource hog.
