City Council Opens with Prayer to Satan -

On Tuesday, the local government of Kenai Borough Alaska decided to welcome other faiths to their assembliesIris Fontana – reportedly a member of the Satanic Temple organization that views Satan as a symbol for rebellion and rational inquiry – gave the assembly invocation usually reserved for pastors.

Meeting attendees were reminded that they did not have to participate in the opening ritual.

Assembly members stood silently in a circle while Fontana asked them to “embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge.” She then ended the surreal prayer with the words “Hail Satan.”

This is not going to be fair and unbiased reporting "forgive me", but if we don't stand up and fight back against this "everything is ok now" attitude America is gone -

So they have a different understanding of an imaginary being than you do. So what? I do, too. I don't pray to Satan, but that's mostly because Satan ranks lower than God on my likely to exist scale. He's a great mythological and literary figure, as this shows, but that's about as far as I will go. So someone using that figure as a symbol isn't a problem. Now, if they were advocating human sacrifice or burning churches or something, sure. That's a problem. But AFAIK few actual public Satanist groups actually preach such things. As your source rightly states, they see Satan as a symbol of rebellion and turning against authority, not of literal Evil.

I think they were just trying to get in the news and call attention to how unnecessary it is to require an opening prayer at a city council meeting (and expect it to be of evangelical Christian preference). Unsafe, for a Christian, you sure afford Satan a lot of power. If you believe what you claim to - that God is in charge - then who cares about someone praying to Satan? It goes nowhere, and means nothing.

Ditto what Mendalla said...if they are involved in horrific things that’s a different matter. But this is of no more significance than praying to Darth Vader would be.

:)

I am largely of the opinion that councils/parliaments should just ditch prayers before meetings, period. Even this rotation concept is bound to miss or mess up something. Let's really get church and state separated.

I find it weird that it happens. I don’t think I was born yet, if there was ever a time that it was expected or approved of in Vancouver or Victoria. I’d be surprised if it was. I really think silent prayer is best anyway. I don’t even think the bible...for the literalists out there...supports public prayer.

Do not offend my Dark Lord Vader. He shall hear of this when I commune with the Dark Side of the Force tonight.

:D
I actually had a Satanist follow me part way home late at night once. He was showing me creepy (but very well done and intricate) drawings of satanic images he made. I was trying not to show fear and to act “normal” and tell him he’s got a talent for drawing, even though I would never buy his “art”. Then he said “I’m going to talk to the father about you.” and disappeared down the alley behind a dumpster. I was like “Uh, okay... I have to hurry home, fuuuuk that was weird.” I walked home on the street under the lights just to be safer, and seen. That was actually kind of disturbing. But a publicity stunt at a city council meeting...nah.

:)

I should mention, that was in downtown Vancouver, walking down a residential side street at night...all kinds of strange characters can be encountered there, mostly harmless characters...but that was kind of a freaky experience.

:)

Has every single organized Christian church deliberately missed this since day one?

Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Part of the problem with the perception of Christians is just this exact thing. Rather than our faith reflected in our actions...or just our actions on their own merit, done in good conscience...Christians have given ourselves a bad name for being arrogant by praying in public and getting in peoples’ faces trying to appear pious. It’s a big reason why people are put off by Christianity.

That is the usual argument against public prayers like this. However, praying in government settings is a legacy of Christendom, not a Biblical teaching. It really goes back to Divine Right and the idea that rulers are chosen by, and responsible to, God.

And, to be clear, I have no issue if individual Christians or even churches want to pray for God to guide their political leaders or grant them wisdom or whatever. But they should do it privately or in church. In our multifaith world, government assemblies should be as secular as possible, not scenes for sectarian prayers.

One of the nicest, cleverest guys I never met (an on-line friendship) was a Luciferian. Again, quite a rationalist.

One my favorite theologians, the late Marcus Borg, began every class he taught with a silent 3 minute meditation. I do that, but I usually use a short passage/prayer before the meditation, in order to provide a focus for those unused to regular silence. It's usually one I've gotten from the World Prayer Wheel. I've never seen a prayer on the prayer wheel that wished evil or ill on anyone, no matter to whom it may be directed. Not all prayers begin with a clear statement about the presumed Listener.

Thus the pitting of rational things about the irrational ... those that have lost all thought due to reasons that may be a riddle to those that do not wish to know much ... as knowledge really is a pain ... or a hole in the pane as a mire image!

The world of leisure continues for a few souls that are unsatisfied with thought ... thus drained and empty ... hollo 'd eck/ICHs? IHC was once a term of a loving soul that cared for knowledge ... a devilish thing for the irrational to grasp! Results in djinn and Shaytans ... and surry's with fringes as Buggies ... encountered insects!

One should know their words, metaphors and everything resembling crappy allegories as the irrational can't figure this chit out as bits of knowledge that'll sow all the patches together in a great fabric beyond our wildest construction ... mental Eris?

Actually, in the book of Job, the Accuser (Satan) appears to be a member of God's heavenly court, playing what could be called the Devil's Advocate, raising issues no one else wanted to think about, pointing out things others didn't notice. Maybe that's the aspect the Council was going for?

If an atheist would even say a prayer, it would sound like this one (very generalized), only without the hail satan......it's only the hail satan that sets it apart IMO. For the most part, to me, it sounds disingenuous and conniving to bring mainstream acceptable thoughts into this prayer as the bulk of the matter in order to engage and deceive at an acceptable public level a satanic agenda.
I don't think everything is required to have support in the public arena....this is one for me, and yes I'm aware that satan is seen as advocate in the Jewish Bible, but I doubt that is the satanists interpretation..

Thus anonymous Gods as nominalized by Hebrews as idealistically unknowable ...

Imagine if God is love ... and love causes one to lose thought, knowledge, etc. ... what about the character that could gather all that was dropped by the enthralled by excess passions? Could that character attribute be nominalized?

There are those that would prefer not knowing ... and thus don;t look .. as if suffering psychic blindness ... kind've a kin to PTSD!

Some neuroscientists are now making use of a 5-7 day ayahuasca therapy as a cure for dark haunting things emerging from the indeterminate parts of the soul ... as a blanching process it may be labelled as a sort of whitewashing of destructive conscience! These are uncommonly known processes ... thus outstanding as something in a pastor/field all alone ... some broader visions may be of assistance ... thus dispersive lens! Occidental scatter effect ...

I think most "Satanists" are just atheists making fun of religion. It's just not my style.

Thus anonymous entities hoo muses ... evil thinkers!

There is so much common wisdom that can be hidden in silent stuff wrote! Sometimes it can scream though ...

Nah, there's actually a rather 'romantic' element that looks at the more attractive, a la Milton, fallen angel sort of attributes, and seriously concludes that, in Milton's Paradise Lost anyway, Lucifer comes across as both rather more magnificent, and quite as moral/ethical, as Yahweh.
