Chemgal...I also hope you and your family are doing okay...not the best way to start a new year and a new decade. Faith, my dog, is eating breakfast at the moment. I've had to trick her into eating two pills: one for pain, and one an antibiotic. The vet said the lump was most unusual and highly colourful. Faith is definitely in pain last night and today: She looks at me and whines, expecting that I will fix it. Wish I could.
 
Snow wasn't as bad as in '96. It melted a lot by yesterday, and got crunchy and slushy. I found it much more stable to walk in with two canes when it was fluffy (walker was a hassle, had to pick it up every step - it was a lot of slow hard work - two canes worked better, though I only walked to the property line and back. Now they're not as secure in this crunchy slippery combo, and my walker gets stuck regardless of type of snow. The strong winds that accompanied the snow made the storms unusual and that much more difficult though.

I got a ride to the mall yesterday to buy some groceries and get out of cabin fever mode. The road, parking lot and sidewalks around there were pretty clear. Around here though NOBODY shovels their walk or driveway or sidewalk. My neighbour next door was the only one. I talked to him. He says he's a prairie boy and it's just what comes naturally. So his strip of driveway and sidewalk has no snow, contrasted with the rest of the block that is a mess. I don't think people here know it's their responsibility to shovel their sidewalks. In Vancouver it seemed to be more common knowledge.

@revjohn - hoping you all are safe out there - sounds like there is a hurricane but with snow instead of rain in NL!

Interesting. In Berlin you also have to shovel your part of sidewalk and if someone falls and breaks something it would be your home insurance to cover the cost. So, most people make sure it isn’t slippery.
Here we have a little sidewalk machine coming by from the county. After storms, it often is a day earlier than the road is ploughed ( talking 2-3 ft of snow here), so we can walk to the neighbour but not drive out on the street.

I believe there are similar laws in place in many Canadian jurisdictions as well. I know Nanaimo reminded people that they are responsible to clear sidewalks in front of their homes. I expect that rule is in the other cities on the island. It was the rule in other cities where I have lived.
 
Getting reports from my granddaughter in St John's NFLD. She is getting a taste of what I worked in while travelling there for some 13 years.

It was at times wicked test of nature against the mortal ... nature doesn't appear to have limits ... isolated individual? Beyond me ... I'm only mortal ... I think ... although some say I'm out-of-here & now! Almost like a parable ... needing added imp lickations! Thus the little stuff beats us ... cumulatively!

Talking about cleaning up- in southern parts of Germany, you have to sweep the street and the stairwell of the apartment building if you are renting an apartment, and people are watching you very much that you are doing a good job( or they talk about you). I never lived in such an area, but it is known as “ sweep week” which means your week to do the job.

What a beast of a storm up in Newfoundland. 12,000 homes and businesses without power in St. John's including CBC St. John's. States of emergency being declared. Wow. Hope @revjohn and his clan are hunkered down somewhere safe and warm.

We are expecting 10-20cm here but that's far cry from what they are getting. Just means I'll actually have to shovel (something I have not done much this winter).

Putting out a fresh pot of HOT coffee and firing up the kettle. I suspect some people will be needing HOT beverages around here.

That's sort of what a coop building would expect - except chores would get determined after discussion, according to who could do what. So nobody's giving the stink eye to the 70 year old with chronic arthritis if they've indicated they cannot do that task.

For typical renters that's the landlord's responsibility.

Strata buildings often (always?) have similar expectations of residents and maintaining common areas but they most likely pay an outside business to do it..
 
This is an article about various cities in BC. As you can see, most have rules saying owners, tenants or occupants must clear their areas. Some places have a timeframe when this is to happen.

Same here - it's a city bylaw that the homeowner must clear the sidewalk - a big job at times. Our sidewalk is right beside the road - so when the snow plow comes along all the snow from the road ends up on our sidewalk & WE are expected to shovel it off. Sometimes a little sidewalk plow has started coming down our street - that's new. Last week it drove about a foot into my garden - now some nice deep tire track adorns the landscaping!
