Not exactly a household name, eh? Until, that is, you hear who he played for the better part of my lifetime: Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.
Caroll Spinney was part of the team Jim Henson assembled to operate the Muppets on Sesame Street. While Spinney himself was virtually unknown for most of his career, doing his work from inside the Big Bird suit/muppet, his characters became world famous. He stopped inhabiting the Big Bird outfit some time ago, but continued to do the voice until last year, when Matt Vogel, who also succeeded the late Jim Henson as Kermit the Frog, took on the job.
