So, tonight marks the first time that an NBA final game has been played on this side of the border. The Toronto Raptors take on the Golden State Warriors in their first ever championship series. There's lots of excitement among basketball fans in TO, but what about the rest of the country? Is this a big deal nationally or just a Toronto/GTA story?

I'm not much of a basketball fan myself, so it's a bit "meh" for me but I understand why basketball fans (including Toronto born and based hit-maker Drake) are pumped for this. We see it here every time the Knights (Jr. A Hockey) or Lightning (minor league pro basketball) have a hot year. And the Lightning in particular have been having lots of those.

So, any Raptors fans or bandwagon-jumpers on here?

It isn't really my sport, to be honest. I'm glad they are playing in the finals, but not excited.

After the hockey riot in Vancouver, I am not enthused about sports finals in any big city getting too much hype. People can get way too emotional about sports.

Actually, the celebration after they won the Eastern Conference final went pretty well. Police reported no arrests made directly linked to the party. I think the biggest worry now is whether Drake will have a seizure on the court. His cheerleading and dissing of the other team get a little over the top at times.

I'm not a person who follows sport throughout the regular season, but like to watch the playoffs - especially if any of the Toronto teams are playing. The whole Greater Toronto Area is getting in on this historic final series - lots of other big outdoor venues setting up Fan Zones - in Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington ... maybe others too. Some of the Cineplex theatres are showing the games - free admission :) And they've been playing really well so far ... ahead 10 at the half ... exciting game!

I'd rather follow the NU's ... bad sports remind me too much of the POT us is in ... gives me a sunk feeling!

We're into it and don;t know it yet ... time laps?

I really enjoyed watching the game - well played, and Raptors deserved the win. Several players really performed well, and it was a full team effort. Will be interesting to see what transpires in the next game ... what learnings came from this one :)

Apparently there were - police estimate - 20K people gathered outdoors at Celebration Square in my city! Amazing spirit.

Game 2 is the key. A lot of people thought the Raptors could win Game 1 just because Golden State hadn't played in 10 days and might be off their game a bit. But with a game under their belts the Warriors have shaken off the rust. If the Raptors can win Game 2 they have a good chance to win the title. But it will be tough. Raptors are a good team, though, with a lot of depth and they play relentless defence. They're a different kind of team than Golden State has played so far in the playoffs.

in the post game interview with GSW coach - somebody asked about 'being rusty'. Coach replied - 'well - you know media will spin it - if we lose it's because we're rusty from 10 days off, if we win it would be because we're well rested from 10 days off' ... just spin.

Game time tonight - 8pm!!

I was reading an article on the Raptors and hadn't really clued in that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment now own all the big Toronto pro teams except the Jays: Leafs, Raptors, Argos, and Toronto FC. They're basically set as long as at least one Toronto team is doing well.

Game 2 looms. Some of us are excited for the game. Some for Drake's latest antics. Definitely one of the more entertaining celebrity sports boosters.

Per Devon Heroux of CBC via Twitter, Barack Obama is at tonight's game. I knew he was up here for an event last week. Guess being a big basketball fan, he stuck around for the game.

He did - got a standing O from our fans when they announced he was present :)

Can you imagine the reception Trump would get if he had the courage to show up in Toronto for a basketball game?

Would that be the same Toronto who saw Rob Ford as a City Councillor and still decided to make him Mayor?

The same Toronto in the same Ontario that watched the Ford gong show and still made Doug Ford Premier?

Yeah, I can imagine two possible receptions.

Yes, that's the same Toronto - and I stand by what I wrote. Trump would not be warmly received. As much as people like to make the comparison Ford is not Trump except in the sense that both are objectionable to me, to say the least. Trump would not be warmly received by the vast majority of Torontonians, including, I believe, the vast majority of Ford voters.

Walk Off The Earth have announced that they are booked to sing O Canada at Game 4 in Oakland. NeYo is singing the US.

But we have to get through game 3 first, don't we??

Not Raptors related but very obliquely related to Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment.

The Newfoundland Growlers captured the Kelly Cup last night putting a big huge bow on their inaugural season in the ECHL.

I'm torn.

I like to support my adopted province in most things.

The Growlers are a Leafs farm team and I am and always will be a Habs fan. Our previous ECHL team was the St. John's IceCaps and was affiliated with the Canadiens.

Congratulations Growlers.

Growlers - good name! A chip off the old berg!! perfect for NL.
