We did not receive any nominations for someone to fill the position being vacated by @revsdd.

This has led Council to again discuss reducing the number of moderators. The fact is, there isn't a lot of moderation needed on here. Keeping the spammers and other undesirables off can be done by admins as well as mods and there are relatively few problems needing mod attention day-to-day around here. We are generally a well-behaved bunch. (Generally ;)).

So, we would like to hear what the membership feels about the idea of reducing the number of moderators on WC2 to four. Three has even been mentioned but since we have four continuing to at least next year, four is likely where we would go for now.

One possibility would be to set a minimum of three but allow Council the discretion to add up to three more (i.e. take it up to 6) without having to get the Council document amended again. That way, Council has some leeway to decide when they need to add mods and when they can just go with the minimum.

Other suggestions will be entertained at this time.

Depending on what we here, this will likely be followed by a vote to amend the Council document based on discussions here and in Council.

I like the suggestion of "between 3 and 6 moderators". In fact I would even suggest something like "minimum 3 moderators".

Two issues are relevant as far as moderators are concerned:

– The absence of obvious bias.
With 3 or more moderators, the likelyhood that all moderators would be heavily biased is reduced. In theory, it could be possible, even with 10 or 20 moderators, to have them all being on one side, but it has not been an issue to far. So at the present, with 3 moderators, it is quite possible that if one moderator develops an issue (or a perceived issue) with a user, the two others are able to weigh in and add an extra level of objectivity.
(P.S. I'm not hinting that there is a problem right now).

– The moderators' workload. This is an issue best identified by the current team of moderators. As moderators, you know when you need more help, whether it is because other personal or work commitment limit your involvement, whether we suddenly lack discipline or whether it's simply that the number of participants increase suddenly.

The absence of obvious bias.
Good point about having enough moderators to balance off any biases on the part of any single one.

The moderators' workload.
As I said in the OP, moderation work is generally very light, mostly due to our small user base. We'll get a flurry of activity from time to time, usually related to a specific user, but it's fairly quiet the rest of the time (e.g. the report queue has been empty since the end of April).

Thanks for your comments. Well thought-out as ever.

Given the seeming lack of interest, I am closing this thread and we will be putting forward a proposal and a slate for 2019-2020 council in the next few days.
