She wasn't giving an "authoritative opinion", she was giving her personal visual impression of the font. Which is how someone visiting the site would also react. In fact, you're the one claiming authority for your opinion with your posting about Gilbert Baker. So just stop and think before you post further. We have your ideas and opinion and don't need you picking apart those of other people. Please and thank you.
No, I looked up rainbow fonts and found this and I thought it was more symbolic and worthy of respect for obvious reasons. I’m supporting the people who actually have an authoritative opinion on it because they invented it. Nevertheless, I agree that if you want to fit a whole rainbow of colours into one character, the Gilbert font won’t work.

I like the rainbow too. Did you know rainbows are really circles? No end.... oh no, no treasure?

Sorry, I looked out of the plane's window and saw it. I was really surprised, the rainbow is round. A circle.
I guess because I could see the whole thing from on top of it. Maybe that is the treasure bit... it is a circle
and there is no ending. Hmmm I really like that. Some of you might know this already, but like a child I am
still in awe.

I am quite fond of rainbows and we really don't see them enough down here in Southwestern Ontario.

I will be changing the header image to something fall-ish (Red supplied one already) this coming weekend. Still meditating on the rainbow in the logo. I may post what I created in dev and gauge reaction. Unfortunately, my friend Karen's availability has been sparse so haven't had any movement on the rainbow 2 idea.

Certainly falls colours are bright and varied. Why don't we ask the community we want to represent?
If that's what we want to do... be more inclusive and more visible about it.

To be clear, there are two different things here:

The header image is the photo in the top right, currently representing summer via a beach scene taken by Northwind. That's the one that's being changed to a fall image. It is normally more of a mood-setter than representing anything, though I did make it a rainbow during Pride month.

When I talk about adding the rainbow, I am talking about putting it with the logo, which is the coffee cup and the word "Wondercafe2" in the top left.

As for asking the community we want to welcome, we don't exactly have a lot to go on unless someone plans to talk to LGBTQ outside of WC2. RitaTG is pretty much our only active LGBTQ member and she's pretty scarce these days for various reasons.

Oh, and our Pride rainbow will be coming back as a permanent sign of welcome to LGBTQ+ folks. Just working out the best placement (suggestions welcome). Currently thinking of creating a small version of it to put above the word "Wonder" in the logo. May not be ready until September but we shall see.
I've been thinking about this today. I understand the wish to signal a welcome to all. I am a bit concerned though that the rainbow image may suggest not just suggest welcome but that the site is a 'safe space' for the LGBTQ community. Sadly, in our past there are those here who have not welcomed diversity and been pretty damning in some of their comments. Scripturally, (at least as I understand it) it represents God's covenant with the creatures of the earth after the flood - but the meaning/interpretation of this covenant seems to vary depending on who you read. (LOL - I'm sure others will view/interpret it differently even from what I have written here.) I do agree with the desire to check first, rather than assume such a change would be useful or desired by the groups we strive to welcome - their voice matters more than ours I think.

I want our welcome to extend to people of all ethnicities, all sexual orientations, those of all faiths & no faith - hard to wrap that up in a simple graphic manner tho.

I do like the idea of the changing photo - and perhaps if we want to make the banner more colourful, changing the '2' to a colour that connects with the photograph might meet that desire.

Indeed. The only way to make this a safe space would be much tougher moderation. Basically, any misgendering, attacks on people's orientation or gender, etc. become warning or banning offences. And there are boards that do that (misgendering is a banning offense on rpg.net IIRC). Given that we run a very lean, lightly modded operation, I am not sure that it is possible or desirable here.

I am not actually certain that the Pride Rainbow has anything to do with the Noah story of the rainbow. Wiki suggests otherwise since the Noah story is nowhere mentioned in its history of the Pride flag.

So, the plan for now will be to hold off on the new logo while we have further discussion. I don't have the time or energy to do the research or find people to consult. While I am bisexual myself, I am not connected to any LGBTQ groups or communities (in fact, I'm not out IRL) so am not the one to do it.

The new header picture will be coming soon. Just need to take the one Red provided and get it to the correct size.
