This story came up earlier in the week and intrigues me. I'll bet someone's going to get a book or two, fiction and non, out of this one.
Short version: Italian police searching for a girl missing since 1983 got a lead that she might have been buried in a tomb in the Vatican's Teutonic Cemetery that is supposed to hold the remains of two nineteenth century princesses. With the consent of the descendants, they opened the tombs for a look. Not only was she not buried there, neither were the princesses.
So, as the police go on with their search for what happened to Emanuela Orlandi, the missing girl, Vatican researchers are starting to look into old records of work done in the cemetery to see what might have happened to the remains that were supposed to be there.
Another weird case of one mystery opening up another. Sadly, the original mystery in this case is a tragic one and, given how long Emanuela's been gone, perhaps unsolvable.
