I am a huge fan of the show to start with (singing and dancing felines, what's not to like?) so maybe I am a bit biased, but I am in for this. And it's Tom Hooper directing, who did a bang-up job on Les Miserables, his previous shot at a musical. And Jennifer Hudson singing Memory.

Chemguy described it to me and it really didn't sound good. I thought that they would basically lose the human faces. With human expressions though, doesn't look so bad.
Not something I would seek to go out to, but wouldn't say no if it was a group decision/would watch it on a streaming service.
 
Some people feel far more entitled to be more pissed off than other people that the entitled feel are not as important so as to be disentitled and thus great voids as everything (God) causes divining ... and thus it goes on as split shafting of skewering of the passions versus intelligence ... and the bible states that trees of knowledge are not good! Thus naivete propagates ... however some gates do fall down ... consider Jerico! It was hard-walled too ... kinda stoney attributes if you get allegory!
 
Say you were walking across the street with your daughter and suddenly you hear an engine rev and a red head peels into the cross walk, runs over your daughter and leaves the scene.

The police cannot find the driver, but the driver posts on the internet that the reason he ran down your daughter is because she has brown hair and he hates brown hair.

So people here, who have no understanding of racism and sexism think that you should be justified in waiting at that intersection and dragging redheads out of their vehicles and beating them up because they have red hair.

If someone hates your hair colour, and because of that, do you harm, that does not mean that you are entitled to use that same irrational logic to get back at them by harming other people with their hair colour. That makes you equally hair colour intolerant.

I suggest that maybe you missed the message of Roots and try watching it again. It is probably the most important tv series that has ever been broadcast.

You don’t fight racism with racism, That just causes escalation.

I get that what I am saying makes no sense to racists.

Probably close to 1/3 of my favourite musical artists are blues/soul singing about the path out of racial oppression. It is often indistinguishable from Christian music.
 
@Pontifex Geronimo 13 ...So you watched Roots and now you know all about what racism feels like in America? Unbelievable......i am not a person of colour, so not qualified to answer on a personal basis, hopefully someone who is will speak to you.
Or go speak to a black man and tell them how you understand because you watched Roots.
 
PG13. If you live in a place where almost everybody is white and some people are rich while most people are poor, you would not see any injustice based on race. If you were one of the poor folks you may well be able to find injustice simply based on class and status. Widen the lens out to the bigger picture though and what you find is that being black statistically, and in actuality, means if you are poor you are going to have an even harder time with more layers of injustice than if you were white and poor. It’s a fact. You have to look at the big picture. In the big picture white men still hold the majority of power. People of colour and women moving up the ladder because of human rights, means the white males’ power, for no other reason than they are white and male and accustomed to calling the shots, feels threatened. The move toward equality seems like bigotry. Justice seems like bigotry to those who feel historically entitled to power.

Nicely explained, Kimmio. Sharing power means letting go of our egos, at least a bit, and white, straight, cis-males seem to find that hard. Some straight, white, cis-females, too, as we see in the conflicts in the feminist movement over the status of trans-women, but the men are definitely the biggest problem. And, yes, I am saying that as a white, (somewhat) straight, cis-male.
 
Oh, and I'm not clear what all this has to do with movies we want to see.

Marvel unveiled their "Phase 4" on the weekend. I'm eyeing The Eternals with some interest since Neil Gaiman was the writer for a revival of that title. Not sure if it will be based on his version or the original Jack Kirby series, though. Kirby created The Eternals (based somewhat on similar New Gods series that he did for DC) and had a pretty interesting visual style, some of which has already leaked into the Marvel movies. Also, Canadian actor Simu Liu (best known for a role on Kim's Convenience) will play Shang-chi, Marvel's first Chinese superhero. It's a martial arts title dating to the seventies that I'm not familiar with but I imagine they will look to Chinese martial arts movies for the style of this one.

Last week I went to see a re-run of Hegwig and the Angry Inch at the university theatre. I thought it would be a good little break from stress, but then it wasn’t so much. Turns out, I only got to see half of it then the fire alarm went off in the building and we had to leave. There were only about ten people or fewer waiting until we could go back in, but it took about 15 minutes, it was still going off, and they decided to send us home. The movies there tend to start a bit late - they usually wait for people to amble in and buy their popcorn or whatever - it’s a pretty laid back second run cheap-movie theatre - so this would’ve made it run even later. Long story short, I really want to see the second half of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I will get comped, I was told, for a free movie - but that one isn’t scheduled to be shown again. I can’t find it online. If anyone can point me to a legit link, I’d appreciate it.

PG-13, how you conflate racism with a general awareness of white cis male privilege is beyond me. You're like a colour blind person making all sorts of assumptions about the nature of colour.

He's trying to spread right wing propaganda. Maybe we should ignore him. There's no coming to agreement because that's not what they're committed to - they are on a mission to spread their subversive agenda to flip the understanding of basic principles of human decency upside down - bad is now good, racism is now bigotry, human rights is now fascism, etc.

There is no moral equivalency. People need to stop the "both sides deserve equal time" bulls**t. We're past that. They are now getting into dangerous levels of fascism. No, we didn't get where we are today by choosing not to engage with racism or not consider racist points of view. Quite the opposite. Society is rotten with racism because it's accepted or tolerated too much.

I'm a vegetarian and I can't drink alcohol - but whatever I like about a person shouldn't be seen as tolerance of far right propoganda or the ideology that motivates it.
 
Oo, shiny. Criterion, makers of high quality DVD transfers of classic movies that are packed with features have announced their 1000th release: a boxed set of the original Japanese versions of the 15 Showa era Godzilla movies with English subtitles. These were made from 1954 to 1975 and range from arguably the best Godzilla movie ever, the 1954 original, to some of the character's lowest points (All Monsters Attack, aka Godzilla's Revenge). While the US English re-edits and dubs have been around on TV and video for years and are what made me a fan, some of the original Japanese versions have only been available here as imports until this release (e.g. Godzilla vs. King Kong, which is getting a remake as part of the Legendary Monsterverse as we speak). The only one I have seen in its original form is Gojira/Godzilla, the aforementioned 1954 original.
