Just an early head's up that there will be a vacancy in the lovely Okanagan Valley mid-Jan. We will form our search team and get the position description out shortly. Just wanted to plant the seed for folks to ponder.

I'm in. I need Saturday and Sunday off for skiing, and a list of adult races in the area.

I'm in. I can even provide newcomers from other countries with free ESL lessons.

@Tabitha

Okay, I realize my offer and Jae's were both jokes of varying effectiveness, but if forced to endure each of us for one Sunday, which of us do you think your congregation would prefer?

Chansen-not a lot of downhill or slalom races but lots of freestyle-olympic calibre
and I think the congregation would let you and Jae each preach 1x. Our theology certainly falls between the 2 of you!
and neither will meet requirements as Jae's training is not reconized by UC of C. He would need supervision as well as courses on United Church Polity-and have his name read across Canada-when courses are done-to see if anyone objected to him transferring to the UC of C.

I was recently at a community event. Some people who attend the local UC told me how much they were looking forward to the arrival of their new minister. I actually already knew this, having heard it at a local grocery store.

A bit later I used the information to start a conversation with another UC member. I was subjected to an aggravated torrent of words demanding that I share my sources. This apparently was private information and the congregation hadn't yet been told. The exchange surprised me a bit - secrets don't remain secret very long in small towns unless no one knows!

I responded to a vacancy years ago when our family decided to get Robert the medical help he needed we would have to leave NL.

We did not declare an intention to leave until we had secured a Pastoral Charge to move to.

For obvious reasons, if the search took longer than 90 days after requesting a change I lose the housing if the manse and the salary of the position.

One reason the information is kept confidential is to protect incoming ministry personnel.

At any rate. I had done a phone interview and the Search Committe felt I was the best candidate for the position they just needed to negotiate the terms of the call and call a meeting to present my name.

In the meanwhile, my name was leaked and some members began to run online searches of me. They were generslly pleased by what they found and that information was shared freely.

So freely a member of the community mentioned it to the Presbyter on the search committee and the process was stopped in its tracks.

Presbytery declared the process null and instructed the pastoral charge to disband the Search Committee and start the search again.

Which is a questionable interpretation of polity.

The Pastoral Charge complied, re-elected 75% of the original Search Committee reduced the search to one preferred candidate (me), interviewed me a second time before negotiating terms of call then had the meeting to place my name before the Pastoral Charge.

It was a bit of a bother which I took in stride because it only represented a delay in me requesting a change in Pastoral Relations. It did translate into a month and a half delay. Which could have been a month of my family out of a home, with a halved income and no employee benefits.

All because one of the original Search Committee members shared a confidence with his wife who shared the information out in community.

nasty situation revjohn - glad it resolved well in the end. I imagine things will be a bit different in future with the online information process.

Jan 20th is our current minister's last day.
We are in the process of hiring someone 8 hours a week to do pastoral care. I headed up this group and choose 3 folks to work with. We met and came up with job description and interview questions. We had posted position in our bulletin and had 2 qualified candidates, both from the congregation. Both are awesome and after very careful pondering one will be recommended to the Board on Tues. night. If for some reason that candidate declines, 2nd one will be proposed. Both are awesome.

Pulpit supply arranged until May. Jae and Chansen I did not see your names on that list.

Great that you're considering candidates right from your congregation. Hope all goes well. As for my name - I could preach if you'd like to Skype me in.

Problem is it is not just preaching, it is the whole service planning and leading. We prefer our worship leaders to be present-tho last time I lead the service I played Richard Bott's 10 minute moderator nominee speech. We do have 2 screens at the front and 1 at the back.
