I don't actually buy much made in the USA these days, but China is almost impossible to avoid. Some of the stuff we import from there simply is not made in Canada anymore. Even a lot of goods from more developed Asian countries like Japan and Korea are actually manufactured in Chinese factories due to lower overhead (Samsung, I'm lookin' at you, though I see they are now using Vietnam as well). For clothing, places like India and Bangladesh are starting to become the sweat shop of choice, so there's options there.

In the end, the reality is that all nations need to step up and focussing on the US and China without upping our own game just makes us hypocrites.

Tis a dark gam' OZ ... powerful hidden things slip by as slick business! Caduceus!

All need to step up. Some need to step up considerably more.

Many buildings in Korea don't have a 4th floor.
I don't understand this at all. If you label the literal 4th floor as "F" or "5", you're still on the 4th floor. Same with the 13th floor. Just saying it's not the 4th floor doesn't make it not the 4th floor.

I think this ties in with my anti-religious nature. I don't care how much you want something to be true, if you tell me something that appears unbelievable is true but can't demonstrate that it's true, I'm just going to look at you like your brain is on fire.

In a language like Korean or Chinese, it may have something to do with how the character is formed. So using a different character could actually make a difference to the superstitious among them.

But, yeah, if it's about numbers then the 4th floor is the 4th floor no matter what label you put on it. Though I have always wanted to write (and probably someone has) a story where the missing 13th floor really exists in another, hellish dimension. Of course the plot would involve some poor schmuck finding a way to get there and paying a horrific price for it.

Towering inferno over where Moses backed off in the light of love and chose the beast in the brown jar for escape ... altered consciousness? Set a watchman and get home earlier Android Caps Ms.

Of course it's just a superstitious thing. Of course floor F is actually the 4th floor. Many Koreans (and Chinese?) tend not to like the number 4 in the same way as many North Americans tend not to like the number 13.

numbers, numbers. I think it is in Britain where they call the "first floor" what we would usually call the "second floor". And then there's whole ground floor, basement debate ... we are a curious lot!

Where I used to work in Toronto, there was a "B," but then also a, "2B." Huh?

We strive for convention. Some buildings, you walk in and you're on floor "1". Sometimes, you're on floor "G" and "1" is above you. This drives people mad and if they have a gun they may start shooting. What we need is consistency and the recognition that we have a base 10 number system and superstitious people are free to simply not live on any floor number they deem unacceptable because they are stupid.

I had to work for a time on the "14th" floor while they were doing renovations on my floor. Stuff seemed to "happen" when we were working on the 14 that was really 13. Was glad when the renovations were complete and we could get off that floor.

Friday the 13 th ends even then on TGIF! Thus we fall into the following Shabbat Deis ... a come down moment?

Such luck must be experienced ... take the whines as you will ...

The Vatican isn't really off the hook - they are involved in the private High School sexual events recently hitting the news. What a surprise that was (sarcasm) - who would think that there was bad behaviour at a school run by the RC's?

Oh no, it's just this one isn't them. There are more Catholic horror stories to come, I'm sure. The Vatican is an organized crime ring.

Indeed! The last hospital I worked in had no third floor in one of its wings. It had to do with the different grades where the buildings all sat. It was most confusing for staff and visitors.
