So, I've been asked to do a sermon at the mission church where I'm a lay preacher explaining with as much clarity as I can muster all about the Holy Spirit.......
I can describe the various roles that the Spirit has.
But, as for the rest, I find it a difficult task.
As regards the Trinity - we have an idea what a father and son represent - but a Spirit?

How would you describe the Spirit?

How do you know if the Spirit is guiding you - or is it your own thoughts?

Is a spiritual experience a sign that you are being taught/guided/ helped/ comforted by the Holy Spirit - or is it just an emotional experience?

Does the Holy Spirit feature in your personal faith? How?

Spirit is essence ... such as the essence of the dance of emotions and intelligence ... when one swells the other recedes and recesses!

During some of these waves that overcome in an generally unseen state ... the essence of material takes over for a bit as a (w)hole in the pages of time that we assume are only materialism ... a belief that all that exists is physical matter.

This very troublesome for people that believe in light, the absence of awareness of light messages (Hermes), space (intangible) and space (a dimension that many people are indeterminate about) and time (something that whips up in some spaces like Plato's commentary labelled Timaes).

When it comes to Latin, Hebrew, Biblical Greek and Runes ... you may come to the conclusion that these are dead languages. Then if you examine the roots of English ... some thoughts about evolving language may rise due to the curiosity of: "why did they say that in that particular way with attached participles?"

Small particles may have a point when raised in the winds of time ... d/dt is critical! For editorial efficiency d/dt may be rendered as DT's ... many powers are negatively afflicted with their intoxicated powers and claim they are positive attributes in essence!

Does this open space for learning in the veil of darker space that remains unseen? It is simply an essence of foreign intellect ... as fermenting essence it seems to despise the mine syndrome ... no digging into their background!

These essences of emotions are said to be real by those without a stinking thought! That's they often is in the PEWs ... except for the sly moles, and weasels that sneak into to find out what makes BS shimmer and bubble. Some may even turn white with black tales to tell about lives they don;t understand whatsoever. That's ermine ... or Hermeneutic of the other shade ... as scripted in black and white ... sometimes in red and yellow to complete the medicine circle ... divisive weal!

Is insane another intangible essence ... as the old sage says ... if you believe your sane you may not be ... and there is an inverse to the rule once known as roue, arche, or ruse given the tricks of time in the machinations of psyche! Newton supports such observations in the mental realm as all activity has reactions ... like going against a well-set precedent could get you killed due to the power of Master and Commander if they get a god syndrome ... illustrating what intense wills can do to a leaders aspirations towards intelligence: "They'd rather not consider that reasonable!

What's beyond that is unknown, unthinkable, unreal and yet questionable as all unreal essence! One has to be a bit out of the situation to observe it as science in the dark ... obtuse, shady or as occult as you might fear! Fear is a big essence in political wars ...

These all cause ripples and rifts in that weird quantum spectacle that is beyond us as a denied cosmological psyche, a huge potential ... given the content ... mostly nothing ... but darker forces! IT remains under investigation and question of whether tyrants can control it ...

Is there a chance that quantum science will be questioned by rigid determinants that everything as everything always was and everything doesn't go round in intangible dimensions? You may have guest we know little of the recessive "beyond" no matter how the gods of reality approach it, it recesses as Moses in the face of God ... "O" the insane things we have to do to replicate ... discussion, incursions and intercourse in disturbing dark matters ... it may even be allegorical as black sheets an unintelligible activities! Are any actions practically material or just create more material ... like the inverse when the slaughtered roman god spoke to the brute force of de athe end ... in Greek it may have been atticus on the fly as shay-Dan.

In some tradition giving a light workforce a break for a drink is out of the question for the tyrants that believe any break is Shayton, satyr or a trick stir in steady production of destructive materials ... war industry? Expect conflicts in any thought as knowing anything or everything is a pain!

Is a pain something that can be seen? I've been told by doctors and PHD's that pain is all in my head ... and if lost (head) the pain goes --- Charles Dickens on real leadership of monarchist! The theme and main conspiracy of the Tale of Two Cities! Some say it is an unbelievable story as the rein of terror was no more real to them than the blitzkrieg or holocaust! When mountains collapse ... all that is left is teles! The wasted truth is in a story --- Jack Nicholson ... Legend exists on a page! It must be read into ...

Can essence be defined and determined when appearing as pheromone from the pines? That still small voice of primal hormones leading to metabolism ... a poorly understood function in some circles! Functions are activities ... that when interrupted by opiate receptors in the cells ... crap won't pass mus'ere ... thus clouds and fogs in Eire as a sigh'n on the coast! Seas rise in essence of contained heats!

When you look at the images and stories about the Spirit, it is God moving in individual lives as a source of strength, inspiration, power, etc. Jesus Christ is God's Word incarnate in the world, the Spirit is God moving in the world and in his people. Kind of like a muse or Socrates' daimon but on a grander scale.

To carry that further, for me the Spirit is more about sources of inspiration and strength than a literal being. Perhaps there is such a being working through those sources or maybe it is just my inner "voice" but what matters is how I take strength and inspiration from them.

There are determinate kinds that would find it somewhat spooky ... beyond absolute! Thus the incarnate, or abstract sense of something incomplete ... like a cracked vessel!

How would you describe the Spirit?
It's the same con as when a salesman explains complicated technology to you that he himself does not understand, but attempts to wow you with. If you want to participate in the con, wax poetically about the role of the Holy Spirit in your life, but honour tradition by being purposefully vague in your claims. Speak fast and glowingly, not giving anyone a moment to pause and reflect on what you're saying. Nod your head when asking them about the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives, to entice them into agreement before they can think. There are all sorts of little ways you can manipulate people into buying in without actually thinking, and you're gonna need them if you're talking about the Holy Spirit.

Hello silence my old friend ... what are you doing back Eire? Stop and know is not possible for the extremely motivated and thus the alternate moves in the other tensor ... negatively speaking ... recession analysis? Makes some get their back right against the wall ... then you're shot ... something like the Whitehall item ... Jack?

PilgrimsProgress-------YOUR Quote from OP --------So, I've been asked to do a sermon at the mission church where I'm a lay preacher explaining with as much clarity as I can muster all about the Holy Spirit.......

How much do you know yourself about who the Holy Spirit is and what the Holy Spirit represents in the Bible ------

For instance do you believe the Holy Spirit is a real Person ----Do you believe the Holy Spirit indwells the person and Speaks to those who say they have the Holy Spirit -----Do you believe the Holy Spirit directs the people who say they have the Holy spirit -----are you interested in speaking Truth or your own clarity on what you think is the Holy Spirit to your group ---

Believers and unbelievers will have different views on the Holy Spirit and His Functions ------important to clarify which way your going ------so feed back fits your thinking ------

Holy essence is more of a great void ... eliminating something so there is room for information and intellect processing, etc.

Some just don't get this void condition as a place to put broad thoughts! Thus hard flinty points to get around on the way to greater visions ...

Here is a fore instance ------

Mendalla's Quote above -------for me the Spirit is more about sources of inspiration and strength than a literal being

.
The Bible is very clear that the Holy Spirit is a real person --------Who is referred to as He ------so I believe the Holy Spirit is a real person as the word says He is -----God is a real person and the Holy Spirit is God -----according to scripture

Mendalla is an unbeliever by Bible standards ----I am definitely a Believer by Bible standard ------

The Bible says that God's word is truth ------So there is your 2 different views ------on who the Holy Spirit is ----one view is mans ----one is God's ------one is truth ---one is us thinking how we want to view who the Holy Spirit is by our own terms not by God's teams -----

We can preach truth -----or we can preach our own thoughts on what we think truth is ----which could make it a lie ---

God is a "he", the Holy Spirit is a "he"...it's all about men's views already. It's a total sausage fest, because no woman would be so ridiculous as to write this stuff.

While I'm thinking about this, you also want to seize on anything that comes in threes. Things like three leaf clovers, triangles, three strikes and you're out, celebrity deaths and the Three Stooges are all good ones. Weave them into the sermon as metaphors because people will fixate on the commonality of the number "3" between them and won't even notice that they have nothing to do with the Holy Spirit.

Same old, same old, same totally predictable.....

After chansen trashing the thread, I doubt whether others will have much to say that's positive and helpful for sermon preparation.

That's how you present the Holy Spirit - three things in one. There is no serious discussion about the Holy Spirit possible, because it's ill-defined on purpose. Nobody has ever made sense of it, and that's supposed to be the mystery of it. I have fun with the concept. I especially enjoyed comparing it to celebrity deaths, which as we know, come in threes.

Anyone is free to attempt to discuss it seriously, but even the United Church makes a mockery of it with the whole "Chasing the Spirit", "Embracing the Spirit", "The f***ing Spirit Got Away Again" and my favourite, "I'll Chase the Spirit This Way and You Tackle Him" series.

You can choose to see my involvement in the thread in a negative light, but it's also brainstorming, in a way. Take a step back, recognize that I actually have a bit of a point here, and have fun with the idea. Use an aspect of this in your sermon. Admit that it's totally bonkers, and go on from there.

Or, just be mad at me and write a boring sermon. Up to you.

3 levels of domains of one existence?

1. The Physical Domain
 • Simply speaking this is our world perceived by our five senses in the physical realm. It is the visible realm of the material world, bound by the laws of physics. Everything in this realm is determined by cause and effect.
2. The Quantum Domain
 • Here everything consists of information and energy. The degree of attention that is given to information determines its effect. The difference between the physical domain and the quantum domain is that they are just perceived differently by us. Our logical mind creates the illusion of a solid world, but everything is in fact in a state of movement as it interacts with everything else in this floating world of quantum reality.
3. The Spiritual Domain
 • Is an unlimited field of infinite possibility and potential, both positive and negative. Every bit of information that comes to you originates from the spirit realm, which is the infinite source of possibility and potential. You determine by the submission and agreement of your will, through your choices, which present thought is going to reign in you. You are what you think and manifest what you think.
Everything starts with an idea, which is a thought. That's why it is crucial to pay attention to your thoughts and discern their origin. Attention is one of the most important abilities you possess. The word attention comes from the Latin attendere, which means, "to turn one's mind towards" – to turn one's mind or perhaps one's senses; the act or state of applying the mind to an object of sense or thought.

Our very perception of reality is tied to where we focus our attention.

At the atomic level, we see that every particle is also a wave. This is called partial wave duality. It is also know as Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. It turns out that just at the exact moment that something is observed (or given attention), this wave-particle is in a state of pure potential. In quantum physics DUALITY OF LIGHT is shown in double slit experiments: a beam of light is moved across a table – going through 2 slits and hits a detector. If you observe it as a particle, it stays a particle. If you CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE or OBSERVATION and look at it as a wave, it CHANGES ACCORDING TO WHAT YOU SEE INTO A WAVE.

You frame your own life by the thoughts you think and the words you speak. It is your choice.

Call it what you will ... it is what it is.

I tend to remember Richard Hitchens agreeing that the Numinous (that's possibly a new word for you?) and transcendence do exist in his opinion, but he then went out of his way to explain why they had nothing to do with God or the supernatural........some of your arguments sound rather empty also.....

Why would God be necessary for there to be transendence? I don't find that empty at all. Transcendence is about the idea that existence is more than just what can know with our faculties. Strictly speaking, a multiverse (should there be such) transcends our universe and our universe transcends us both as individuals and as a species.

That's where spirit, if such exists, is to be found IMHO: In our experience of a reality bigger than ourselves. That needn't be supernatural, though. The complex universe (or multiverse if you buy into one of those hypotheses) is enough.
