A very kind offer Kay!! It is a charming place for sure and I think it would suit you well! And adjacent to Puddletown as well! I love the names of places in the UK!!

The interior and the furnishing would give me nightmares, so would the thought of the heating bill and the hours lawn mowing.....

Perhaps it comes with a grounds keeper?

Seems a bit posh for my tastes.

Yeah, a bit too ornate and posh for me as well. But maybe I could adapt . . .

Cut and pasted from an email I got yesterday. The landlord reply is first just the way it arrived. My initial reply to their ad is second. I put * in for obvious reasons. The ad requested "Tell me a bit about yourself". I was honest - except a couple years is now more like three years of bouncing from temp to temp housing whether on my own or with family...I went through major separation, a move of cities, and a broken knee since I moved here too. It would be worse to explain everything. She has some nerve, though.

Hi (Kimmio) , could you call me for a chat *** *** ****. There is a gentle slope to the suite, no stairs and the bus route is on **** road, 200 metres from the house across **** park. In my experience, mature tenants have their own furniture and equipment. I am not willing to put the existing furniture and equipment in storage. We have had serious issues with drug and alcohol abuse by mature tenants. If you consider yourself a well balanced individual not abusive in any way, and you are ok with the above, please call me .

Hi,

You have a message regarding your ad on ******.ca One bed sitting room, kitchen, bathroom

****@gmail.com says: Hi There, I am a responsible, reliable separated female in my 40s looking for a long term rental for myself. I lived in Vancouver until a couple of years ago, after my husband and I split up (we have no kids) and have been renting in temporary accommodations since. I'm seeking more stable accommodations. I walk with cerebral palsy, using a cane or walker and require a ground floor entrance or something without many stairs to bring my walker in and out. I work downtown in an office and require convenient bus routes, also. Otherwise I am easy going. You would hardly notice me. Please let me know if I can see your suite. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, (Kimmio)

It's literally enough to drive one to drink (which I don't do). Not something someone like that is capable of understanding...they don't get that they are part of the problem, too.

I don’t understand your concerns- the landlord also seems to be very honest about the environment of the apartment, his/ her bad experience with previous tenants and the expectation that you use ( and take good care) of whatever furniture is in the apartment. What are you reading into the landlords reply?

First off - they need to keep that to themselves. Their past problems are not my responsibility.

Secondly, it's blatant ageism, discrimination against women, and people with disabilities to say those things to a woman (me) who has just explained her situation more than she even needs to - and mentioned her age - before the suite has even been viewed.

The landlord made several discriminatory assumptions about me, and what I did tell her didn't register the way a compassionate human being would register it or consider what to say in their reply. It was extremely callous.

Imagine it was you Mrs. A, and all you mentioned was your age...and you got a reply like that.

I mentioned my age and that I have CP and she set out to tell me if I was a person older than a college student (the ad mentioned students and being convenient to the university) then she's going to assume I'm a drug abusing alcoholic. Anyone with any compassionate inner voice with any knowledge of human rights knows a landlord can't say that kind of thing to prospective tenant they've never met, in such a rude manner.

I don't understand the accusations against the woman. You explained your situation, she explained hers. She's willing to chat. She also explained the area around her place so you would be able to determine if it met your accessibility needs.

How could she have explained it more appropriately in your opinion?

Imagine you had no idea I have a disability. What if I had just said I was a divorced woman in my 40s who works in an office downtown, would you still think it appropriate to say that she has had problems with "mature" renters being alcohol and drug addicts? I'm guessing she'd be less likely to link 40 something divorced woman with drug addict and alcoholic, as she would assume that people with disabilities with lower incomes are all alcoholics and drug addicts. But even if she did respond the same in both cases, she's wrong to do so in both cases.
