I've had it for a year now and, while not perfect, it certainly has been a help.

Shortly after I got it, I ran into a problem. I spent two days trying to fix it. Then I called for help. Mendalla answered and within two minutes I had it up and running. Since then I've muddled through whenever its acted up. But yesterday morning it refused to work at all.
I turned my computer on, and woke the dragon up. Then I began dictating nothing. I might just as well have been talking to a plastic toy mic.

Since then I've tried everything I can Think of\ Pressing buttons on the dragon bar and trying to follow their instructions. Nothing works. I'm afraid I may have messed it up good.

I'm pecking this out with ywo fingers. I have to write a sermon and draft an order of service for Sunday.

Any suggestions wouldbe appreciated.

I tried again. It says to press the hotkey. Where is the hotkey?

Thanks Carolla. I found the plus + key on the numerical pad. Pressing it turns the dragon icon on the dragon bar red for Off; green for On. When it's On it flashrd the message thst I can dictate or use voice commands.
Nothing. No reconition that its heard anything.

Seelerman has turned the computer off, removed the battery, and replaced it to reboot. Nothing.

Any further suggestions?

Really difficult to say not having it in front of me - I did find this:
No audio detected
If Dragon is not responding to any audio input, try these steps:

  1. Check the microphone mode. Dragon can only hear audio when the Microphone button in the Status Window is green (
    Microphone on
). For more information, see Microphone modes.
  2. Make sure that you're not in Transcription mode. Dragon cannot hear you when you are transcribing audio. When you are finished using transcription, click Switch to Dictation. See Transcribing recorded audio for more information.
  3. Make sure your microphone is working properly. See No audio signal for steps to test your microphone.
Troubleshooting overview (there are links within this link that did not copy over)

It sounds like you're past 1. So is it possible it's in transcription mode?

Never mind, the links did copy over haha, so you can check those out.

Thank you for your efforts to help. Unfortunately, I still have no Audio.
I am right back where I started Everything looks good. The icon in the centre of the Dragon BarBut nothing happens. turns red (off), and green (on) when touched. If not used for awhile, it goes to sleep (blue) but wakes up when touched. When green I temporarily get a message indicating that it is ready for dictation. It worked fine for almost a year.

I don't even know if I have a transcription mode. If so, I don't know where to find it or howto turn it off or on. I suppose it may have been turned on accidently.

I use the built in microphone, sitting back about two feet from the screen. The same as I always have.

I've tried to follow instructions, but usually end up not knowing the correct terminology, not finding the correct key to press, going around in circles.

I'm frustrated!

Have you tried calling your service provider and asking technical support to walk you through fixing the problem?

I shut the computer off and went to get groceries. Back now, I turn it on and it's listening again. But responding very slowly. Maybe it will speed up. I've got a lot of work to do.

Thank you all for your thoughtful suggestions. Something worked.

Oh no! I spoke too soon. Dragon helped me with a few sentences. Then I turned the mic Off (red), as recommended when not in use, while I organized some papers to begin the work that should have been started Sunday. When I touched the icon to turn it back on it changed to green but refused to do anything further.

I shut the whole thing down and made lunch.
Started it up again; and again no audio.

I'm going to shut it down again while I read the newspaper. If I can't get it started I don't know what I'll do.

Woulde a computor repairs and service place be able to help?

I would think a geek squad type person could help

It sounds like you have a deadline. What about contacting a local teen to type for you in the short term if you are really pressed for time

And sorry. My knowledge of computer glitches has me only plug and un plug

So you know the microphone is at least being recognized by the program, and is on, etc.
Searching, it being slow may be turned down low:

To perform a microphone check:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Microphone>Check Microphone.
    The Check Microphone wizard opens.
  2. Proceed through the wizard.
For more information, click the Help button on each screen.
If you disabled the Automatically adjust the microphone level as I speak option in the Choose a Microphone dialog box, Dragon prompts you to close and then re-open your user profile for your new audio level settings to take effect.
  3. Click Finish.

I'm still curious about the transcription vs. dictation modes too. I'm headed out, will try to help more with that if the microphone check doesn't work.

Oh, quick fix if you are in transcription mode, try this:
  • Click the
    Dragon menu
icon in the menu bar and select Switch to Dictation…

I'm wondering if it might be possible that the microphone on the computer has been inadvertently put on mute? On my computer that's the F4 function key - but possibly different for others. Hmmm ... summer detective work.

Damn Dragon - get a hearing aid & stop frustrating my friend Seeler!!!

That's a possibility. Unfortunately you've hit a lot of what I would suggest trying. I don't really know Dragon well myself.

Do you use Skype? If so, try the test call in it. If that works, you've at least rules out a Windows or hardware issue with the mike.

On my computer that's the F4 function key -
On some keyboards you might have use the FN key, so hold down FN then hit F4.

I've tried to work through all of the suggestions, but I seem to be going around in circles ending up at the same place over and over. Like having a car that you,ve driven many times. It's full of gas. Ready to go. You turn the keys ready to take off - and nothing happens.
I've called for service - a couple of young women, highly recommended, who have set up a business of servicing computers - often for older people - and they make housecalls.

Thanks again for trying. I'll let you know the results.

Sounds like a good option. Probably cheaper than Nerds or Geek Squad.

Lastpointe, this might work if it wwas strait forward typing; but I compose my sermon as I go along - rearranging paragraphs, inserting, deleating, changing my mind. Taking time in the middle to locate a particular quotation, confirm a memory. It would require an excellent, and patient, secretary. It would drive a young computer geek crazy.

Hopefully it will get fixed fairly quickly - but more than a 30s fix :) At least for me, I would feel frustrated if someone could fix it that fast.
