Quite a discussion about Hamburger Helper and I mentioned the Thatcher Trial

and Joanne Wilson.

Is there a food or some such thing that reminds you of an event?

Good Lord what a menu ... or should I say milieu? (sometimes a dark lo' fog)!

There's foods I associate with people, places, and events in my own life but nothing I really associate with news events.

For me, it was Hockey Night in Canada but, yeah, Popcorn = TV watching in my childhood. By the time I came along, Bonanza was in syndication and I mostly watched it after school when I did watch it (never been a big fan of Westerns, but Bonanza got a bit of a by on that because I liked the cast).

Butterscotch pudding reminds me of a job I had in high school working in a hospital kitchen. I believe we made the pudding from a mix.

The smell of toast and fresh oranges in the morning still brings CGIT camp to mind once in a while.

No food associations with world events.

Peanuts remind me of the Saturday Morning Club. This was a club for kids at the Royal Ontario Museum. Street vendors would always be outside the ROM, their red carts filled with such goodies as peanuts, popcorn, and candy apples.

My mom made 'special' eggs for us if we were ill. Called "invalid eggs", they were really soft boiled eggs mashed up with a lot of butter and a bit of pepper and served with lightly toasted white sandwich bread.

Absolutely, like you'd stick it into a saucepan and simmer it for a few minutes then cool it. No concept of fresh ginger tea. My mother would not have known what to do with a piece of fresh ginger. "Ginger" was a dried spice that one added 1/4 tsp of to christmas cake, 1/2 tsp or so to gingerbread.
