I've never found him particularly interesting or engaging. Most of his self help stuff is standard "make your bed" stuff that your parents were supposed to teach you. And if he wants to take on the role of boring, pedantic, authoritarian surrogate Dad figure to the world, well, more power to him, I suppose.

But I couldn't read the review. I'm going to have to subscribe to some sort of news service beyond CBC, perhaps.

I find a lot of self help type books are like that Bette. Sort of common sense, just do it kind of stuff.
on the weekend I read a piece by a woman about raising kids. How she was struggling but during her work with indigenous people iin North America South America, Africa....... she realized that these groups of people handle their kids so differently than non indigenous people. Children are part of the family, work, help, are given tasks, parents don’t negotiate, just expect ....... how she found it so life changing

and I thought , yes. Isn’t that what your mother told you to do?

That's why I am generally not into them. Even a lot of management texts seem to be kind of straightforward, common sense stuff. Though the management training we are using at work right now (or were before COVID, the program has kind of sputtered for the past year) actually gave me some good ideas and probably helped reshape my management style a bit. Keeping in mind that my formal management education is even skimpier than my formal IT training. One management course in library school is about it.

I didn't appreciate his self-help laced with cultish politics.

He's had his day in the spotlight, made his money - more than enough to retire on - putting down social justice causes in the era of Trump. He's travelled the world whipping people up into a religious fervour. I don't wish him great success with this new book. I hope it's a dud. That's the nicest thing I can say.

This was him a couple of years ago before speaking to a "right wing youth" organization called Turning Points USA - funded by the Kochs - that was endorsed by Don Jr. Just in case people forgot who he worked for.

Review of the book in the Star quoted Antanas Sileika, former head of creative writing at Humber college. I went to high school with Sileika. We.knew him as Tony in those days.
