okay Mendella

was replying to historic threads from WC - Chansen driven - that it would not cost much

and then Pinga has to assume role of treasurer and not cost much

and out of pocket Chansen volunteered - so now he has resigned, a cost has arisen

Just saying I asked these questions before and was told ver framkly that these would not be issues for WC2

so big question how is this site hosted - who operates and runs it and pays for it

Not me. If I could, I would make a donation to the cause, but I have precious few cents, am a member of the working poor, and am attending one of Canada's most-expensive postsecondary institution.

I can, however, bring you all this lovely picture of a forest...

Mandella cannot call it donations unless it is a registered charity :)

be honest about WC2 - volunteer driven not a charitable site

Since you understand financial concerns redhead, maybe you would make a good Treasurer.

(Thank you for the compliment on the picture. I thought it was a pretty picture too when I first looked at it. I thought it was showing forest growth. Turns out - it's actually forest fires - which are not a beautiful thing if sparked off by humans.)

i offered financial services and was received with a resounding NO
Not a problem no issues

Chansen happily paid out of pocket and Chansen and Pinga posted that finances would never be a problem

so I guess that treasurer is not an issue

and Pinga is totally committed - she never just flies in and then leaves and yes I refer very spcifically to WC history when she state that is how sho rolls

so change is great - and Pinga is committed it is honestly very good

perhaps Pinga will share the cost of running ths site so that people understand paying into it

or it can evolve into a blog - where one person pays through iis operation as part of a wifi email home thing

Bloody hell, you're at it again.

Hosting is somewhere around $100-$150/year. Software is, what? Somewhere around $200. The style was about $400 I think. All together, year 1 cost less than $1000. Ongoing costs are less than $400/yr.

Software updates can break the site's custom theme or "style". But, given that the style only cost about $400, updating it to be compatible with the latest software update isn't going to cost more than $100 or so. I know getting a XenForo expert to install an update costs about $50. Installing the update is easy for me, and I assume Mendalla can do it as well. We could probably use the services of our old stylists (Russ) to update the style to work with the newest XenForo version, and install the update in-house. It will be a tweak. We email him, he still has a copy, we pay him for what will be less than an hour of his time, he updates it and emails the style to us, and we upload it to the server.

This is not a deal breaker, it doesn't mean we have to approach the UCCan or the Canadian government, cap-in-hand, and it doesn't mean you were right. The software is working well. Last week, we had to manually ban 3 spammers. Updating the software might reduce that number, but it's hardly unmanageable or requiring the intervention of CSIS and the RCMP. That's why no one is in any hurry. Things are fine. Unless you need things to not be fine so you can get everyone all excited and say "I told you so", in which case, that's your department and you're not doing so great at that, either.

We said no, @redhead because we felt we did not need someone to write grant applications and such. @Pinga 's forecast out to 2017 (which I won't link to yet since she may need to update it) last year had our three year costs at around a $1000 (not a year, but for the three years), most of that upfront and already paid at this point. Your posts at WC during the original discussions suggested you thought we needed a lot more. We do not.

Mandella cannot call it donations unless it is a registered charity :)

Um, no. A donation is still a donation even if it is not tax-deductible. It is not longer a "tax deductible donation" but it is definitely a donation in the dictionary sense. However, if it makes you feel better, we can call them contributions or gifts. We are, indeed, not a charitable site and see no reason to go through the headaches of becoming one right now though it could be discussed (in a new thread in Council New & Business please, not here).

It is hosted by Crocweb, a Canadian-based Internet hosting company for roughly $125 per year. They provide the Internet access, backups, and a virtual server on which we then installed Xenforo. The template that gives the site it's look was designed by an experienced Xenforo designer for c. $400 one time. We may re-engage him in future to help with upgrades and such. @chansen has done some of the work of patching, I have done some work on adding logos and smileys and such.

As I said upthread, the Treasurer is supposed to report annually so @Pinga should be posting updated financials soon. I suggest we not discuss this any further until we have those since hard numbers are better than idle speculation. Also, this topic is better suited to a new thread in Council News & Business since we are derailing a tips and techniques thread with business discussion here.

okay Mendella thank you but honestly to belong and pay money to this site is a membership fee

and if the people who own this site continue to pay out of pocket for maintaining and upgrades then all is good

Haha, cracking me up.
Love to have fun responding to this topic, but Mendella is right. Welcome is not the place for it.

honestly it is really great to continue this site - Chansen said it would not cost much and so did Pinga - so whoever owns the site and can afford it - great - keep it going

so now my two questions: who owns the site
and who is going to guaranty and pay out of pocket to keep it going

because that is what Chansen was all about - easy peasy and he would do it

Not slamming him - it is very fair that he resigned (people have lives to lead and explore)- so what is the succession plan?

Redhead, please start a new thread. This thread is for people to learn how to post.

I will offer to have my posts deleted to return this thread to it's purpose. as well.
