Those were the last words of Roy Batty, played by Dutch actor Rutger Hauer in the eighties s-f classic Bladerunner. Now Hauer himself has taken his leave of the world, passing away at the age of 75. I was a fan of Hauer back in the day, enjoying his performances in a variety of roles and films. Bladerunner is probably his most famous role, but he also appeared as a serial killer in The Hitcher, a vampire in the original film Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, a bounty hunter in Wanted : Dead or Alive (a reboot of a 1950s TV series that starred Steve McQueen), and numerous other roles. Besides his Hollywood roles, Hauer also starred in a number of Dutch films early in his career, often directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also ended up in Hollywood. His films and roles may not have earned him a lot of awards, but his performances were strong and he raised a few otherwise so-so movies a notch or two just by his presence.

Perhaps his best role, or at least my favorite, was in the fantasy film Ladyhawke, where he played Etienne of Navarre, a knight cursed to become a wolf by night. No, it's not a werewolf film. The curse is designed to keep him away from his love, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, who becomes a hawk by day so that the two are never human at the same time. The film is about a young thief (Matthew Broderick) who encounters the couple and helps them overcome the curse and the evil bishop behind it. One of the better fantasy films of that era (1985) due in no little part to the presence of Hauer and Pfeiffer.
