Is Being Human
  • There is overwhelming evidence and outright confessions, bragging in fact by the US, Canadian and some EU leaders that they are committing crimes against humanity against the people of Venezuela with their economic warfare, that they call “sanctions’ which are illegal under international law, and for supporting an internal coup attempt, for their conspiracy to commit aggression and lately the sabotage of civilian infrastructure, the electricity grid.

  • Canada, with the US, and European nations, such as Germany Spain France and Britain, have imposed illegal sanctions, economic warfare on the people of Venezuela in order to force them to turn against their government by making them suffer.

  • In some way it appears as if the United States, its influence weakening in other areas of the world, is attempting to re-establish its one time dominance in North and South America. Canada has been long brought to heel and is just a whimpering poodle in the lap of the American state to the dismay of most Canadians who have no real say in anything. Mexico was once in their pocket but already there are signs of trying to undermine and slap down the new Mexican President Obrador whose social democracy is too left for the far right that controls the US machinery of power.
War Against Venezuela Is War Against Us All

The latest twist to this sadistic game played by Washington is turning the lights off across the entire nation, in homes, hospitals, airports and schools, among other essential services, and attempting to lay the blame on the Venezuelan government.

The delight openly displayed by Washington officials in regard to aggression against Venezuela has broken new ground in terms of the brazenness of US imperialism.

  • Republican Senator Marco Rubio – who has become a point man for the Trump administration in its regime-change campaign in Venezuela – was a little too celebratory. Within minutes of the nationwide power outage last Thursday, Rubio was having verbal orgasms about the “long-term economic damage”… “in the blink of an eye”. But it was his disclosure concerning the precise damage in the power grid that has led the Venezuelan government to accuse the US of carrying out a sabotage.
  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also weighed in with repulsive gloating within hours of Venezuela’s power crisis. Pompeo tweeted: “No food. No medicine. Now, no power. Next, no Maduro.”
  • Only a few weeks ago, Bolton announced that the objective for seeking regime change in Venezuela against the elected President Nicolas Maduro was for US corporations to seize the South American state’s vast oil wealth – reckoned to be the largest known reserves on the planet, far exceeding those of Saudi Arabia.
  • An aid truck was set alight on a border crossing on February 23. US Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Rubio, as well as CNN, condemned the Venezuelan authorities for “callous” destruction of vital aid delivery to its long-suffering people. It turns out, as even the New York Times has now admitted three weeks later, that the aid truck was torched by US-backed opposition supporters on the Colombian side of the border.

I don't support the actions being taken in Venezuala. I also think Maduro has been bad for that country. It's a very sad situation. Maduro is bad, the other guy would be worse. But also, historically the US and allies have never favoured leftist/ socialist governments in Latin America - and they have been part of the problem. So...while I agree we shouldn't be helping to topple him, Maduro is an ineffective leader.

The people need to hold new elections, with monitors, and not have other countries try to arbitrarily replace anybody or let anyone who may not have been duly elected and/ or is doing more harm, stay.

There is a humanitarian crisis in Venezuala.

Maduro is "part" of the cause of it. There was some election fraud involved in his election.

Guaido is far right and would be worse. Other countries do not have the right to "install" him as leader.

Fair elections need to be honoured, not discouraged.

But we live in Canada .... as people in Canada we need to call for an immediate end to all sanctions and threats against Venezuela?

  • The US and Canada hypocritically claim to be concerned about the humanitarian situation in Venezuela and the suffering of the people, while their sanctions regimes are deliberately designed to asphyxiate the Venezuelan economy. Sanctions are war and the U.S., EU and Canada sanctions are a declaration of war against the people and government of Venezuela.
  • Our interventionist governments cry crocodile tears for “democracy” and “human rights” while they support a violent and criminal opposition that commits killings and acts of terrorism against the people of Venezuela and incites violent protests.
As people in Canada ...

We need to demand an end to a campaign of “regime change” against the democratically elected President Nicolas Maduro?

No, not entirely democratically elected. It was tampered with. They need to have an election do-over. Actually, if I recall correctly (??), Maduro was democratically elected the first time, but not democratically elected (because there was vote tampering) in the second, most recent, election.

I see ... guess I will have to take your word for all that ....
(because there was vote tampering)

What do you call this ...

Canada and 10 Latin American countries are urging the Venezuelan military to back Juan Guaido, the opposition leader who swore himself in as interim president of Venezuela in January, instead of socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

More than a dozen European countries join the United States and the Lima Group, including Canada, in recognizing Mr. Guaido as the interim leader.

Uruguay, has remained neutral on the situation, while Bolivia still supports Mr. Maduro.

Russia, China, Turkey and Iran also continue to back Mr. Maduro.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland detailed the position of Canada and other Lima Group members – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Peru – who signed a joint communiqué on Venezuela in Ottawa.

“We are indeed calling on the military of Venezuela, as we call on all Venezuelans, as we call on all governments of the world, to recognize Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela,” Ms. Freeland said after the Lima Group meeting.

The people need to hold new elections, with monitors, and not have other countries try to arbitrarily replace anybody or let anyone who may not have been duly elected and/ or is doing more harm, stay.

Maybe we should all just keep our noses out of it. We shouldn't be interested in interfering in Venezualan politics.

Maybe we should all just keep our noses out of it. We shouldn't be interested in interfering in Venezualan politics.
But yet here we are:

Ottawa hosted the Lima Group, a 14-country body whose primary goal is Venezuelan regime change, to help lead the way to a solution. To achieve those ends, Canada has encouraged and engineered the self-ascension of Juan Guaido, whose claim to the interim presidency has been supported by that bloc.

Given the crisis in Venezuela, this attempt at “democracy promotion," as Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland calls it, may seem admirable. But it has little to do with democracy, and more to do with installing a government more to our liking – and may lead to violence, or even civil war.

The actual situation in Venezuela is more complicated than the headlines suggest. In 2018, despite escalating crises – and even accounting for electoral irregularities and an opposition boycott – 5.8 million Venezuelans still voted for Mr. Maduro. So he is not completely without popular support. He also still has the backing of the country’s powerful army.

Mr. Guaido, a heretofore little-known legislator who was elected only in his own district, also offers no guarantee of stability. The only salient detail for Ottawa in support of his claim is that he has the support of a majority of the 164-member national assembly, which elected him its president.

Meanwhile, some Lima Group members are being willfully hypocritical in their moralizing.

  • Guatemala’s President, Jimmy Morales, dismantled a United Nations anti-corruption group and barred its head from entering the country.
  • Honduras’s President, Juan Orlando Hernandez, took power in 2014 after a dubious election and violent crackdown on dissent, then ignored his country’s constitution to win re-election in 2017.
  • Brazil’s new President, Jair Bolsonaro, has not only publicly attacked women, gay people, immigrants and people of colour, he has also expressed support for torture and his country’s military dictatorship.
  • Colombia has witnessed the execution of 120 human-rights leaders in the past two years.
Is Ms. Freeland promoting democracy in those countries?

And what does it say about Canada that these are our fellow travelers?

And then there is the matter of the self-interested, sabre-rattling United States, which is now hovering over the proceedings. Canada claims to oppose military intervention, but we are being inexorably drawn in to provide cover for exactly that?

Not sure how the Venezuelan laws are made, but it sounds to me that if a National Assembly votes for a President, he has more legal rights to be President that one who has the power of the military behind him?

There's a little problem, though, Mrs. A., in that 67% of the populace voted for Maduro. I don't know what leg this opposition is standing on, really.

You’re right, Bette, we should stay out.

Btw, I still think both of them are bad choices for Venezuela. The far right guy is worse for the rest of the world as well.

I still think both of them are bad choices for Venezuela.

And I'm sure that there's a random Venezuelan somewhere, looking at Trudeau, Scheer and Singh, and thinking, "none of those are good choices for Canada"....

@BetteTheRed Maybe but not quite - not at all - the same. The level of corruption there is astronomical, and the inequality is rife for conflict. People are starving there en masse. It’s really bad. And it creates a vacuum for a strongman far right leader to take over. We can hardly compare. Trump loves the spread of far right authoritarians, though.

What I find very troubling is that, Eliot Abrams, with a horrific history of supporting atrocities in Latin America, has been appointed by the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as Special Representative to Venezuela.

However, if Scheer gets in here other countries might wonder if that was a good idea. Probably not because Canadians don’t have a reputation for militant volatility within our own country. Nobody pays that much attention to us except that we’re kind of just here. We have to wake up from our priveledged trance and recognize the spread of the far right. It could look more insidious and less obvious here, though, even if it’s part of the same global far right general effort that’s spreading.
