It's a month until Christmas Eve so I deem it an appropriate day to kick off our annual thread of seasonal music. I am trying to keep it as open as possible so basically, if it is music related to a celebration, religious or secular, that happens at or near the Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice, it is fair game.

To kick off, though, some traditional Christmas music from two of my 2020 musical finds.

First up, Foxes and Fossils from a year ago,


And a new recording by bluegrass family band The Petersons,

 
And from a year ago, the Petersons medley of two carols/hymns suitable for Advent

 
I will look forward to listening to these, new-to-me musicians. I put up my tree today...alone...husband out cutting wood; son who is here temporarily was at school. So, of course, I cranked up the music (old school CDs), but....I didn't listen to Christmas music. Even though my house is decorated, and my coffee mugs are appropriately Christmas, I am saving the music as a treat for another day.
 
Somehow, it just isn't Christmas these days without new Pentatonix. A nice original song from their annual (or it feels like) Christmas album.

 
This is a pre-Christian Welsh tradition, going house to house with a dead wren in a nest of evergreens and singing this song. It's symbolic of the death of the King and rebirth. Done on either December 26 -- St. Stephen's day or January 5th...twelfth night. I love the harmonies.

From a favourite Christmas album. I love this minor key rendition. Lends a familiar song a gravitas that makes the lyrics shine.

I am mainly familiar with hearing that sung by kids (Little M had it on his favorite Christmas album when he was little) but this is great. Bob seems to have had a few too many nogs, though. :santa:
 
Another YouTube act that puts out a lot of Christmas material is The Hound + The Fox. They have released two seasonal videos so far this year.


 
This seems especially appropriate this year.

The video by the Peterson's had me doing a double take. It looked like the ?bass? was being held by the woman with the violin on the right.
Optical illusion due to the dark dresses.

LOL. The bass player is actually the mother of most of the band. There is one member who isn't a Petersen, the dobro player is from another musical family, but the rest are the bass player's kids. Their father plays piano, but doesn't seem to show up in their videos as much.
 
One of the few great rock Christmas songs, IMHO, is Father Christmas, written and originally performed by the late Greg Lake. Here, Irish rock greats U2 take it on with their usual skill and power.

 
Budding musician and foodie Romeo Eats is the son of Sarah Blackwood and Gianni Luminati of Walk Off the Earth. He has Mom's hair and musical talent from both sides. And his new music video is just adorable.


Of course, having Mom and Dad post his videos on their very popular band's channel should help his career along. :giggle:

I think this will be an enduring performance and I hope the song of the season. Angelic and poignant.
 
btw, how do I trim the excess text around my embedded clips?
