little kids, little problems

Sadly governments will often act on public perception rather than facts.

Yes that is so ChemGal. It appears in this case that they have decided it is easier to 'look like they fixed the problem' by ripping out innocent trees at my son's expense. Everybody with brains and ethical thinking power knows that the only problem was the driver who failed to follow the rules of the road.

Reminds me of a story of me as a young single parent in an apartment building with a rather awful old electric stove. When stuff stopped working, I was always tempted to just give up figuring what went to what and just replace all the fuses...

I expect many of you know that old Jewish saying "Little children, little problems, big children, big problems'. Today I feel sick for my son and family. Also helpless. Neither he, nor us have the ability to win a fight with the provincial government - no matter how misguided and wrong thinking they are.

This son of mine lives in the acreage at the infamous corner where the horrendous Bronco accident occurred. There were reports filed - one by the RCMP, one by an independent company. Both reports said the trees on my son's property were in no way at fault. There is excellent visibility along the highway providing drivers stop at the well marked stop sign. Following a previous accident at the same intersection it was recommended that the Dept of Highways install rumble strips. They CHOSE to not do that. My son's trees weren't the problem in that accident either.

My boy has put his situation out on FB.

The Dept of Highways have told him that his shelter belt trees and his lovingly tended orchard are to be mulched to improve visibility. That transforms his beautiful, well protected yard into an eyesore that wind and highway noise will rush over. I have heard people refer to his yard as "a million dollar oasis". Compensation for this destruction? Nope. An environmental study into wildlife dependant on the trees? Nope. Any meaningful reason to do it? Nope.

I am finding it really hard to not use foul language and name calling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some powers expect no response to mindless activity! Then do we always know the agendas?

Enigmatic naivete is often prized ... just to support the agenda ... and then agenda is a metaphor for conspiracy ... and some experts don't understand the extent of the status quo involved in some agendas ... tis purel blind mind less Ness ... perhaps related to the Nous!

Some say the Nous is eclectic ...

That truly sucks Kay. Really sucks. I imagine the fact that this is such a notorious corner makes it worse. Anyone fighting that might look heartless given what happened there.

Can he get any community support from people who consider his property an oasis?

I know it's a real long-shot and probably takes forever if they accept your case...

This is a good idea. They can all march outside the Department of Highways with picket signs, "SAVE THE OASIS!"

It is hard to be the victim of something that is through someone's action, and then also be the advocate for yourself, especially with that trauma.
Yet, it is also not something that someone else is going to intrude into.

There is no need for sarcasm here. Please be respectful

Indeed, I was being respectful. The community should be rallied together to protest. Maybe get the local churches and schools involved too. They can go door-to-door to alert the public about the Department of Highways' plans.

I would hire a lawyer. One that will take on big government pro bono

I think if the government demands the removal of the trees then they are in fact saying the driver was not at fault. It was the trees

Contact the défense lawyer. The government can’t have it both ways

The driver pleaded Guilty. If I recall there was no defense.

Somebody posted pictures on FB of other intersections in the area showing how they will need to be altered to meet these 'new rules'. I think they should start by clearing off the store and gas station down the road!

Actually, the trees have never been at fault. The RCMP and the independent researchers both exonerated the trees. If the drivers stop at the stop sign they can see down the highway perfectly well.
