I hadn't even heard of him until last week, when I saw him on the Ellen show.
He just launched his presidential campaign as a Democrat yesterday, and appears to me to be a real contender to go up against the evil empire. It's exciting just to have him in the race.

I think he's the best so far.

"......He said: "I recognize the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor. More than a little bold—at age 37—to seek the highest office in the land. ... But we live in a moment that compels us each to act."

Thoughts?

(If someone is able to post a video of his speech, it would be great).

I think Bernie’s the best, but I think someone younger might end up being the contender...and I hope Buttigeig takes after him in several respects.
He is also a Bernie supporter and would likely endorse him when it comes to that.
He's awfully young, but everyone looks that way to me now!

Other than that, he checks all the right boxes. Could he be the first gay US President? I doubt it, but it's a tall, cool glass of water to see a candidate like this.

There are people that deny creeping agenda's ... then they don't see time as timidly crawling along ... folds and all! May have been Marah in eastern cultures ... and bitters water to accept if you were shanghaied by a Geisha ... similar to a Shaman in other traditions ...

All I can say is that the likely GOP candidate (barring him stunning the world by deciding not to run) is going to have a field day with that name. Which may or may not play into Buttigieg's hands. Depends on how he handles it. Unfortunately, being rude, crude and insulting seems to help Trump rather than hinder him, at least with his base, so simply pointing out how crude and insulting he is seems to be preaching to the converted.

I am so disgusted with Trump’s behaviour...I can’t even... It would be a miracle if he decided not to run. The one hopeful thing is there are going to be a lot of new voters who were too young to vote in 2016. It’s hard to even know how many, because they neither follow nor get much attention from the MSM...they hang out online...but they are waiting in the wings to, I think, come out in droves for whoever the Dem candidate is...and hopefully whoever it is will take Bernie’s proposals seriously - if it’s not Bernie - because that’s what the young voters want. I think it would be a mistake to nominate a centrist Obama style Dem at this time, like Beto. People have moved on to something new. That said, even Beto would be a thousand times better than Trump.

And that's not automatically a good thing for the Dems. If the go too far in that direction, they could lose their older, more centrist voters (not necessarily to the GOP, they could just stay home). If they don't far enough, those young voters might do as young voters tend to do these days: stay home and get cynical about the system. IOW, they need to play their balance very carefully.

I disagree. This time the younger potential voters are going to surpass the older ones in numbers for the first time, the older centrists have to stop pretending they are the guides. They are not anymore. There’s been a generational turnover. Let the younger ones guide them to something better because they had their chance and things haven’t worked out too well. Even Obama sounds stale and outdated now.

What impressed me is that he comes across as quite traditional, maybe not enough to appeal to Reps, but not as visibly Left as Bernie. @Kimmio Laughterlove I'm jaded about how much idealism the US can handle. I worry about splitting the Dem vote, and tend to think, as @Mendalla does that the right balance needs to be found to avoid scaring the potential Rep voters.

And I actually think the progressive left are the ones helping to achieve true balance. The centrists keep things tilted right, in this right wing dominated time. If a centrist gets in, things won’t budge much. The damage Trump wrought won’t be undone very much, if at all. They will remain wishy washy and won’t be able to push things back from the brink the way someone with the energy and idealism could.

I agree that this is all happening in places the old guard hasn't been able to exploit yet.

I’m with the ‘kids’... I’m not a millennial but I feel like one more than I do an “old guard”. I support the direction the new dem millennials want to go in. The future belongs to them.

Why have white male politicians since the 50s or 60s insisted on wearing side parted (parted too far over) helmet hair? Male politician hair - conservative hair. It’s a sign he’s too conventional (In my opinion). He describes himself as a democratic capitalist. Bernie’s a democratic socialist who supports free post secondary (and Buttigieg does not) and is more progressive, I think. Bernie’s always been an outlier but now he’s resonating with what young people want. Still, Pete Buttigieg is far better than The Thing (I am doubting T is even human at this point...maybe he’s a poorly disguised creature from the underworld with diabolical superpowers) they have in office now.

Good leadership is not about people’s looks, but that hair is an entirely voluntary tradition that needs to be broken. It’s for conservative politicians and Bible salesmen. Mess it up a bit! He doesn’t want to come across as too square for the millennial voters, either.

Given how many times his politics changed over the years (let's not forget this guy used to be a gay-friendly Democrat supporter), Invasion of the Body Snatchers comes to my mind (which would make him an alien vegetable rather than a creature from the underworld but the effect is comparable).
